Title: VDJ79 1VD – Oil Pickup Removal Through Sump (Tray Still In) – Anyone Done This?

Hey guys,
Currently working on my 2021 VDJ78 Troopy (1VD-FTV) doing a sump reseal and replacing the plastic oil pickup.
Sump is off, all pickup bolts are removed, but I’ve run into an issue getting the pickup out with the windage tray still in place.
From what I can see:
Pickup is free from bolts
Only held in by the O-ring into the oil pump
Windage tray is still installed
There is very limited clearance to get it out
I can get it to move and wiggle, but it won’t drop straight down and feels like it’s hitting the tray no matter what angle I try.
I’ve seen mixed info online:
Some say it should come out through the sump opening
Others say tray needs to come out (which looks like it requires removing the upper alloy sump/girdle – something I’d rather avoid)
Also managed to slightly bend/break a small section of the tray trying to gain access (have all pieces, nothing missing, will clean it up before reassembly).
Questions:
Has anyone successfully removed the oil pickup on a VDJ 1VD with the windage tray still installed?
Is there a specific angle/rotation trick to get it past the tray?
Or is removing the tray (and therefore upper sump) actually required in reality?
Any tips to avoid damaging the pickup or pump while getting it out?
Just trying to avoid turning this into a much bigger job than it needs to be.

So it turns out 70 series cruisers this is not possible and the upper sump and gearbox needs to be unbolted and moved back 150mm also . It's a big job and needs a hoist which I didn't have . So I bolted the old one back up filled it up with oil and done a oil pressure test to make sure oring still sealed. All good. So if you are going to do this . Prepare yourself and it's a two full days minimum .. your welcome .

Were these “precautionary” measures or did you have a reason to think your oil pickup had issues?
