Got the ARB and MileMarker winch on...

Curious about the winch install. Generally they mount with the motor on the passenger side of the truck and cable spooling off from the “bottom” of the drum through the bottom winch fairlead mount in the ARB bumper. Is that “reversed” mounting a Milemarker thing? Oh, and great job with the build up, very nicely done...

Nothing really technical to add to this brilliant conversation and transformation (great job man on this rig)--

But Badlands Off Road park in Attica, IN has Volvo Portal axles for sale.

I know some of you might be getting the urge to follow in TiredIron's footsteps (I know I am tempted now that I have a reliable DD), so I figured I'd post here.

Best...

PS: I'll be there (as will lots of other MUD folks) on the first weekend of Dec. I'd be happy to look at them if anyone wants....or help in transportation if one so desires.

Later.

The pinion brake would solve lots of problems with the E-brake issue having to be mechanical. I have seen many bolt on kits for the earlier TC's but, is one available for the later 80 series split case or would that have to be custom fabricated?

I think selling the Slee 6" kit and going with OME 2" with 39's is the direction I am heading.

Thanks for the info on the ABS...

Another question; do I have to strip the axles down to the bare housings before welding on my brakets? I've heard many different opinions.

You will have to fab it but it shouldn't be hard, I hope to do mine after the first of the year.

Yes, most of them will be in the way. On the front spring pads you will have to leave enough room to get to the bolts that hold the portal on. This will make them sit in about a 1/4" compared to the stock FJ location. I would also replace the axle boots (front) before welding the spring pads on, these are known for being dryrotted.

Do the stock Volvo rear axles use a mechanical brake as a parking brake or was it off the transfer output as was the older FJ40's? My only hurdle seems to be the parking brake. To be legal it has to be a mechanical type. I looked under my cruiser and it doesn't look as if there would be enough room for one off the rear of the transfer case. Do the companies who sell the disc brake conversions sell only for the front or the front and rear? If the rear axles can be converted to discs, are calipers with built-in parking brakes available?

On my 97 the fuel tank is very close to the transfer output and a heat shield above it would have to be cut for clearance. Have you looked closely at yours? Maybe where mine is fulltime 4wd I could hood it to the front output of the transfer case. I'll have to look and see what kind of room is available there.

You know, the LRs (D90, RR, D1) have a drum parking brake on the rear Tcase output shaft. Maybe you can retrofit that?

Great pics!....wow, the more you post the more portal envy I get....stop it :D:D

I thought a mechanical brake on the transfer output would be ideal but, It appears that the fuel tank on the drivers side is very close to the transfer case output. I don't know if I could squeeze the parking brake there or not. Anyone else put such a parking brake on an 80 series??? My other thought was a disc brake conversion that uses a rear caliper that has a mechanical parking brake built into it. Something off a late 80's Caddy is what I used on my 62 series. I know Xtremevehicles. com is supposed to sell the disc brake conversion for the Volvo axles and I'm sure that I could fabricate a mounting plate/bracket for the Caddy calipers. I would like to just run a LineLock but, these are not legal here in MA for road vehicles. I need a mechanical parking brake and this seems to be my biggest hurdle right now. Does anyone know of anyone who has put disc brakes on the rear axle of a Volvo and could offer up some pics?

Man that 80 is bad ass!

I want portals on mine now!

How many Disco's broke?

Everytime this thread gets bumped to the top I have to look in awe. Damn I wish I knew how to weld well enough to do this. I found a set of these axles locally for $900 (been out in the weather for a while, so I'm not to sure they would even work) damn the temptation!

I have to say, so much for having a desire to run 60's, 70's or even stick with Toyota axles.

After seeing portals, I want them under my 80 and 40.
