Tire carrier gaskets? Need opinions

I’m working toward installing the tire carrier on my 1981 and wondering if I should install gaskets or just mount painted surface to painted surface?

This is a pic of what was on there before the restoration. If anyone has recommendations on where to get new ones (assuming consensus is to gasket) then please let me know.

I think a gasket is a good idea - seal out water - prevent or at least delay rust. Some sort of rubber gasket material

Toyota put rubber gaskets there for a reason. There are aftermarket parts available in rubber or other materials. Not all are US made so sources in Europe or other countries may be required.

I use the rubber sealant that the contractors use around windows and doors. I put it on the bracket side. Found at Home depot and the like. Comes in different widths,

Thanks to both of you for the reply. Also wondering if there was a gasket there from the factory? The more I look at it and chase down pics online the more I think it didn’t have a gasket ??? Which is fine. Seems that it shouldn’t need one.

Wish I had a reference. Planned to take a trip to the Land Cruiser museum last summer to photograph and document things but ended up going out to the WA islands instead.

I can't be sure on the '81, but according to my Toyota microfiche issued Jan. '81 for the US and Canadian markets for the FJ40 series, BJ40, and FJ55 for the period from 03/69 to 07/80, hinge cushions were used on the tube frame carriers for a couple of years prior. See attached pics and p/n's.
