Hello fellas,

I have just changed my timing belt and I went to go drive it afterwards and it was fine at idle. But when I started to go more than 10 mph the truck started to shake and the turbo noises out of the Exaust sounded sporadic and then I went back to idle it did not stop shaking and studdering. It seems like the timing was off maybe a tooth. I opened it back up and they look pretty much dead on the marks, are they supposed to be different? Can anyone please chime in on this?

Thank you so much!
Joseph

You’ll get better help in the diesel section.

Did you simply remove the old belt and install the new one without moving anything or disturbing any thing else?

Did you have a FSM procedure on how to? I know nothing about these but on older VW diesels 2001-ish era there was a procedure to time the pump to the engine after the T-belt after install or something like that it’s been too many years. Is the timing belt only for injection timing? Cause if so the engine may not be timed correctly to match the injection timing. I really know nothing but I see your not getting help on diesel 24v and wondered if you made any progress?

I got no replies and yes, I followed the FSM. Im wondering if it is unrelated. I am taking it to the shop to get it looked at because I just dont have any more time to try to mess with it since its my daily haha. Thanks!

Provided you did not rotate the crank with the belt off, your timing marks look just fine.

There is no procedure to "retime the engine".

Injection timing is gear driven from the crank, timing belt is driven from the injection pump gear, and only drives the camshaft. Depending on how worn your old belt was, a new belt can advance the valve timing a few degrees, in other words, a worn belt can cause valve timing to be retarded by a few degrees.

Did you do another work at the same time?
What you describe sound like you may have an issue with air being sucked into the fuel system. Did you touch any part of the fuel system?
