I've started to notice what can only be timing chain/valve train noise from my engine, more on start up, none while driving. My engine is a 22RE, rebuilt about 2 years ago probably has 15k miles. I of course replaced the timing chain, tensioner, guides and cover at the time of the rebuild. None stock components are metal guides. I do have an oil pressure gauge, SR5 gauge cluster, so I know I'm getting pressure, the engine performs very well. Bad tensioner?

I assume the noise you mean is excessive rattling and clatter when you first start up?

Was the previous tensioner OEM Toyota? I know many folks rave about the kits from engnbldr and places like this, but the tensioner and gaskets to me are non-negotiable, I always use OEM.

Also, what are you using for oil filters? Make sure it has a good functioning anti-drainback valve. Frams are notorious for crappy valves, which allows the filter to drain while the engine is off. The oil pump has to fill the filter first before the rest of the engine gets decent pressure.

Yes, excessive rattling at start up. I'm using NPA gold filters and 10W-40 oil. The tensioner came with the timing kit I got from engblder
