I ve been thru a big set of upgrades/updates on my ‘75 FJ40. The best one for running it was the disc brakes and new rear wheel cylinders but you have that covered being a ‘77…as for your H55 trans, I swapped my 4.11’s for 3.70 diff’s. That makes a great change for street running an at my age this is where 98%of my drive-time is spent. The double seal parking brake speedo housing from Valley Hybrids made a nice difference on the weeping seal. All axle bearings and seals are new as well as complete rebuild of the steering knuckles.
Tie rod ends were also replaced and the steering fine tuned to track so much better than ever before and that has to be due to the 4* caster shims. After long storage of a month or more, starting like any vintage auto was always a few minutes of TLC in order to get fuel flowing properly. ALL OF THAT CHANGED when I installed the Holley Sniper EFI system. This past winter I would wait for the worst temperature to see how it reacted… 1*, 5*. It starts like a brand new 2026 vehicle…instantaneous. Took it to the next level with the Mosley modified Holley Hyperspark ignition system and it is tied to the EFI computer. So here is a computer controlled fuel feed and ignition. Mileage still mediocre but the throttle response is excellent. No coughing, no hesitation and certainly not a sports car but it runs thru the gears around town like a fancy British speedster.
With a bit of convincing the next project had to be suspension. This great running 40 still hit holes and ruts with a bang… not a cheap upgrade but the Terrain Tamer suspension with shocks, u-bolts, bushings and steering stabilizer was another top tier addition.
So here I sit with a big bucks Land Cruiser. It’s not what I was looking for but in my 50 plus years of FJ40 Land Cruiser….this has to be the best one I have ever had.
Ok, let’s get started…which one next?
