Well so wet streets this morning and heavy traffic resulted in me giving a Ford Escape a pat on the rear. The hit was just below the chrome part of my bumper and right above the front cross-menber, I will post a picture in just a few. Truck still runs and drives fine just has a busted lip.

Well I have had a bumper to "fit" in the garage for some time, as well as a new grill and a re-purposed core support, so it looks like the next few weeks (my In-laws are out of town so I have a spare car for 2 weeks) I intend to get the front cross-member repaired/replaced and get the bumper mounted and altered to suit me and then getting my new lights mounted up on the aforementioned bumper. I will probably throw the 22RE build up in this thread as well.

The old girl is due some love after being so dependable all these years, I just hate this is how it comes down. I just hope the next few weeks are kind to me so I can give her some quality time.

Just another project to add to the Que, but this one will slide to the top of the stack.

Stay tuned.

Couple cell phone pics of the damage.

I also think that I need to rebuild the power steering pump. Noticed, while I was looking to see if there was damage, that the PS pump pulley was pretty wobbly.

Rebuild OEM or PSC pump and res

Been looking and while I know that I don't need a PSC style pump and resevoir but I know the PSC unit is good quality, so what are you guys thoughts, should I try and rebuild or replace with an OEM unit or could I run the PSC unit?

Pros and cons for each, and opinions wanted

So what would be good to replace the front cross member with? I am thinking either some 2x3 or 2x4 rectangular tubing would work but I am open to suggestions. And no the damage from the impact wasn't that severe, the front cross-member has been needing this for a while, this is just going to expedite it.

Also, anybody that has replaced the front core support, how long should it take to replace? I have the new one that I can prep. I know I need to get the AC system discharged so I can remove the condenser.

In my mind this is how it should go (once AC is discharged)

- remove the bumper
- remove grill, light buckets, etc.
- remove radiator, battery, overflow bottle and washer bottle
- unhook and pull wiring back out of the way
- remove AC lines and associated parts
- drill out spot welds and unbolt body mounts
- reassemble in reverse order with new parts as needed or wanted.
- enjoy a frosty beverage

Sounds simple but I am worried about the unknown. Realigning panels, things that don't fit right, etc. I plan to bolt the new one on to help with reassembly and alignment.

So since that sounds sooo easy, should be, what 2 hours tops.... I am guessing a couple good days should be enough to allow for some breathing room for the "Oh S%*&" moments. Sound about right? Anything to driving with the AC discharged if I have to drive that way for a few days? Just don't want to ruin my new compressor.

Thanks in advance.

Well, I decided while waiting on a few things for the 80 to come in I would start a little prep work on the pickup stuff. I got my new-to-me core support out and stripped off the un-necessary bits and cleaned it up a little hitting the rust with a scotch-brite and then some etching primer.

It came off a 2wd and whoever came up with using these counter-sunk flat-head screws to hold the spacers on should be shot.

I got 3 of them out with some work, the 4th I had to drill thru and then I tried to drill out the remaining bolt and it got a little off center and I ended up drilling out one side of it and I couldn't get the remainder out. I think I may have to cut the nut off the back and then weld a new one on...

And in case anyone wonders what a completely new, ready to assemble 22RE looks like here ya go.

This pile is literally an entire engine ready to assemble. Block, head, covers, oil pan, pumps, hardware, sensors.... everything needed to build a completely new, slightly better than OEM motor. Don't ask how much $ is sitting there cause I am not sure and I'd rather not know for sure.

I will dig up my receipts and cry a little and get back to you.

I second that on the cost, always wondered what a brand new 22RE would run. What upgrades to the 22RE do you have planned? A better cam?

It is all OEM parts except the timing sprockets, chain and guides (got the steel rail ones). I did get an OEM tensioner. The oil pump is AISIN, but not from Toyota. The head, cam, rocker assembly and valve cover are all from Putney's (22RE Performance). The cam has a slightly more aggressive profile and the head is ported and polished with over-sized valves. And I have a set of ARP head studs for it.

I will have to get my invoices out of the garage and do some figuring, but I am going to guess it will come in well north of $4k, probably over 5.... yep, gonna be closer to 5. I just pulled the few I had handy and I am at $3,900 in the block, head, rockers, valve cover, ARP studs and plugs, wires, and some misc sensors.

I will sit down tonight and try to inventory the pile for you guys, as long as I don't get ripped too bad for being a little off my rocker once you all see the list.

Don't do it! It'll just make you feel bad for spending all that money. The bright side is, you will probably own that truck the rest of your life and never have to worry about the engine again. :D

All True! Gonna be buried in that little rig. It's like any other auto niche group, I know I have way more invested than I will ever get back, but I'm OK with it.

As long as you know that going in and you're ok with it, that's all that matters.

Wow, Nearly 8 months and I haven't even started on this...

I realized today that with the purchase of the Farm, I am going to need to use the truck a good bit more, and I need to get some of these things checked off.

I will be parting with the 88 and the 3.0 that was going in it, so I am about to get it off the stand and start putting the motor together and hope to have it ready to go in in a month or so. I also need to get the bumper squared away and maybe get a XRC8 or Badlands winch to go on the front.

Fingers crossed that I can actually get this thing going this time.

years ago probably 2005 i tried to buy a crate motor 3.0 for my wifes 91 5sp. 4runner from toyota dealership in reno and was told it was discontinued (sp)called seattle where we bought it new and they said the same thing,i was suprised. and ended up selling it because i couldnt get another motor just didnt want to mess around with a rebuilt one ,didnt know you could still get 22r's

I'm not surprised by your experience. A few years ago some knucklehead at Meineke put the wrong oil filter on my daughter's Corolla, it fell off the next day when she was on the highway. By the time she got it over to the side of the road it was too late, the engine was seized. I tried to get a brand new engine from Toyota and a couple of dealers told me the same thing, that they just don't sell them. Both dealers told me the same thing, to get a low mileage one from a junkyard with a guarantee, so I had them (Meineke) do that. It's been fine ever since, except that the doofus put PS fluid in the reservoir which messed up the pump (supposed to be ATF). I didn't want them touching the car again, so I fixed it myself.

The 3.0 was a rebuild. Started with a good block and it has all stock size internals.

The 22R is still available new from the dealer. They still sell several of them and when I ordered mine it was ready for pickup in a couple days, basically how long it took to get it from the warehouse in FL to LOWE in Warner Robbin GA.

I will get some pictures of the misc parts up later this weekend.

Well with the deal for the 4Runner taking shape, I am trying to get ready for the build up of my 22RE. So with that, here are a few shots of my goodie pile.

Short Block from LOWE:

Part Number for anyone interested:

22RE Performance Head:

New valve cover, below in the box is the 22RE Performance Rocker assembly:

Oil Pan, pickup, ARP head studs, timing cover, Gasket set, etc.

And as you could see in the above picture, I did get an AISIN Oil pump, but not from Toyota, but look closely and I am guessing the ground off shiny spot on the left side is where they ground the word TOYOTA off the casting to sell as a AISIN direct part.

http://s84.photobucket.com/user/mrtucker80/media/Scrappy/P1070769_zps2eac1e03.jpg.html

I have to get a timing set on the 3.0 and get the valve covers and cam seals on it before I put the new 22R on the stand.

I also need to pick up some rectangular tube to replace my front cross-member so that I can get my bumper on it.

I hope that I can actually get some stuff going on this. It needs to be ready for the spring.

Also, Anyone have any experience with the Yukon ZIP lockers? I am thinking that if the tax man is good to me this year I may have to try an pick one up.

And just for kicks, here's the 3.0 awaiting the timing set before going off to its new home.
