Thumping PTO winch

I got to use my new-ish plastic winch cable to help in cutting down trees safely.
When some real tension got on the cable, there were some very odd sounds.

Was it coming from the drum or the PTO shafts? Looks like you are spooling out in the video (70s have bottom spooling PTO winches I believe) so I would assume it's a loosely packed cable tightening on the drum as it spools out.

Mine spools from the top and the video was done while the tension was really coming on. I think it was the new rope stretching while shifting around slightly on the spool.

Yep synthetic makes some very disconcerting popping noises. Last year under a particularly nasty pull in Utah, my rope was making my buddies jump as it realigned itself.
