first off hi to all.i hate to ask a question on my first post but i need help. i am currently rebuilding a '88 toyota pickup with the 22re motor.last night after completion i turned it over by hand and i heard the thrust bearings hit the oil pan.they will not stay in place.how do i check the crankshaft end play and know if i got the right thrust bearings as i see there are 3 diff. sizes. i think they are std. .070 and .093. if i put the flywheel on will it pull up the play?please help and thanks for any help

oh jeez. this sounds bad, man. good thing you asked.

you should have used a plasti gauge on all of the crank and rod bearings.

if you dont know what a plasti gauge is or how to use it, you need to read up on one.
go to napa and buy one, first of all, then find the specs for this engine.

the specs are located in the FSM

you also need to measure the rod thrust clearance. and the crank thrust clearance.

here you go, these are the specs but i'm not gonna type out how to do it. you need to get the book, or have some one show you.

BTW, you did torque the head bolts to 58 ft-lbs, right?

rod thrust standard is .0063-.0102"
max .012"

rod bearing clearance std. is .0010-.0022"
max .0039"

the crank thrust clearance std. is .0008-.0087" not much there.
max .012"

main bearing caps std is .0010-.0022"
max.0031"

now figure out how to use the plasti gauge buy buying one and readin the box, and figure out how to use the right bearings by readin the FSM. i just grabbed my FSM and found these easily.

if you dont have a FSM, look in the FAQ for a link

yeah,i torqued EVERYTHING according to the manual

i dont know what a FSM is or plasti gauge is:confused:

thanks so much for your reply, ive been looking for those specs you gave me all night

FSM = Factory Service Manual

These are what you're talking about right?

The only way they can fall out is if you didn't install the 3rd bearing cap, or one side of the set out giving the crank way too much end play...

ok i found the PLASTIGAGE will this help me determine what thrust bearings i need? thanks WristPin

No, you need a caliper or a dial indicator to test the end play in the crank. Are you sure the thrust bearings fell out? It's pretty much impossible if they are installed correctly.... Have you pulled the pan back off?
