In the last two days, I've gotten intermitted grumbling from my clutch. It engages fine, but it's just noisy, especially in the first two gears. I detect no slipping, or sliding, and I recently had te transmission pulled for some t-case work, and the clutch passed inspection, which all elads me to believe it's the T/O bearing on the clutch.
What other symptoms would verify this?

First make sure you have free play between the clutch fork and the slave cylinder. If so, the throw out bearing is only turning when the pedal is pressed down. Could also be the pilot bearing as it is only turning when the throw out bearing is turning.

May seem louder in 1 and 2 because the road noise is down due to lower speed...

what kind of noises are you hearing? chattering? clunking? squeaking?

I no longer have internet access regularly, so things will be slow here.

Anywho, the transmission bound up in third Sunday morning, and the road I live off is too steep, rutted, and windy for a tow truck, so we parked it behind Larry's (Yodaman's) shop, and they pulled the drain plug, and bearing bits came out. My main bearings just died horribly, is the crux of this. So they're building a new L52 with heavy duty bearings.
I'm hoping this is the last big issue I have in recent times.

Also, on the subject of transmissions, I would someday like to install a W56 in there, but Larry says the extra 4" makes a difference with the shifter location, and I'd like to know if anybody else has done this, and if it was a real issue.

well,
that just sucks man. sorry to hear it.
as far as putting a w-56 in there, seems like it can be done because toyota offered it in that truck at some point didnt they?

my bet is that you will have to get a different tunnel cover. (the metal bracket with the rubber grommet in it for the shifters). one out of a w-56 truck. there are probably ones for each transmission option to locate the shifters. Might have to get a new center console out of a w-56 truck as well.

Yeah, Larry actually sells a shifter hole relocation plate, but I think the additional 4" might put the t-case shifter under the center console, but I think Marlin offers an offset shifter.
I think, more than anything, he may have been hinting that it was more of a project than anything else. Longer transmission means shorter d-shaft, new shifter holes, shifter parts, it'll be more than I need to spend for a repair.

Eventually, I'll have to see, because I hope to do an engine swap in there someday.

I've got a whistling noise, that disappears when I push the clutch all the way down. the last inch of play there is no noise.

This is new for me as i used to be the only time I heard this whilstle was in 1st or 2nd gear, around 2500 rpms.

Does this sound like a throwout bearing issue? There was another forum that had a thread on this, you might have even posted on it. Anyway, I think that forum was shut down for some reason...

Cheers

With the clutch out, neither the pilot bearing or the throw out bearing are turning, then turn when you press the clutch in. If you are hearing the noise with the clutch out, then it's probably in the transmission input shaft. As the noise goes away does it slow down and then stop?

i did mine, i would like more info on the plate, also you will need to find a console from the 86 or newer truck.

This has long since been done and done.
I ended up sourcing a later L52 with the G-series input bearing, and had it built from scratch with new syncros and bearings. Works great.

I have a tranny out of an 84 on my 83. I just lowered the crossmember a quarter of an inch. The shfiter here is not like in the w56 where it points forward. I also had to do a swap of the old drive shaft end to a new driveshaft so it would fit to the differential. I never have had any problems and some rough wheeling with the truck.

Sounds to be the same situation as what I was dealing with this Fall/Winter, and again just this week. Check your clutch fork pivot at the slave cylinder rod as well as the other 3 points (2"Ice Skates" and the pivot ball) as well as the bearing face that touches the pressure plate fingers, it probably just needs to be re-lubed w/ lithium grease. Lithium seems to hold up a ton better than the other stuff we've tried. Pic taken from 4x4wire.com

most likely the input shaft bearing on the tranny but always a good idea to check the more affordable options first like the slave cyl/ fork/ throwout bearing setup.
