Im not sure if I have the same type/thickness of piano hinge as the latest incarnation. Mine failed at the welds halfway through Baja - albeit after a few rough roads. It did survive Home, Moab, Kokipelli, and White Rim. But not Baja!

I was able to remove it in La Paz and found that it was 1/16" thick. The real issue was the stitch welds on the perimiter of the folding hinge - 3/4" out from the pin. This allows additional fatigue. 1/16" may be adequate if plug welded near the actual hinge. 1/8" mo' bueno.

I was forced to ratchet strap the lid on for 2 weeks, then swap it out with the only thing available in the marine store - SS hatch hinges through bolted. Really makes you appreciate the Campteq when you have to set up the ground tent every night. Luckily we had our backpacking gear with us.

By the way - this is only meant as constructive feedback, not criticism. The Campteq opened up a whole new world of using my 81 as a 4-season base camp. But I really think there needs to be 2 models.

In response to the op and the jb rtt, I've been doing a lot of homework on both. I personally think when it comes to a rtt, the jb beats out all the others. The materials and workmanship seem to be superior to the magiolina brands. I can't seem to bring myself to committing to a full integration. I do like the ability to take the rtt off and have zero weight up top.

I think I saw Eric's rig last night in basalt
Looks sweet!
It was dark and I was checking it out but people started to look at me like I was going to take something
I have no experience with one other than a couple roof top tents
Great concept
