Have a bone stock 2011 LC with just under 103k miles. Never been in an accident but It had some paintless dent removal a couple years ago and a shopping cart or other item put a big scratch and small ding in the rear liftgate so I had the ding fixed and gate professionally repainted. I have all maintenance records (oil changes mostly done by me w mobil 1 and toyota filters). Water pump replaced, tranny fluid exchanged, regular 5k mile syn oil changes, etc.

A dealer has offered me $27k, which sees really low (even taking into account the sales tax credit saving anothet $2700).

Just looking for opinions as to whether letting it go for $27k on trade is ludicrous or reasonable. I haven't traded many vehicles. TIA.

Yes, that is low according to your description, but it is a dealer, meaning they want a nice profit margin and that is a negotiable offer. Although I have a new one, if I had already owned one like yours I would have been happy to keep it. The new ones aren't much different and there are benefits of having one with some "life experience" over a new one. If you are just looking for more luxury features, then you might also consider replacing it with another make/model that does the luxury thing better anyway.

My opinion: 1) keep it
-or-
2) post it here in the classifieds for a price a little under what you see for similar on cars.com et al.

If you choose #2 you will get more money than from a dealer, sell it to someone who cares about the truck, appreciates your maintenance efforts and honesty, and won't annoy you.

There are currently a total of 7 2011 Land Cruisers nationwide with under 150,000 miles on Autotrader.

The lowest price is 31,903.

200s are rare enough to sell yourself.

He is offering you roughly $4-5k less than he’ll price it for sale.

2011 in that mileage are offed from various dealerships in the $31-33k range right now.

Markson is right. I paid about $32,000 for a 2011 with 96,000 miles less than 7 months ago. It has records and is a southern truck all of its life. It was 2 owner. The good news for you is due to the recall there are not many Land Cruisers listed for sale if you decide to sell. You should be able to price it at the higher end of the market. Remember the dealer has to detail the truck and expects it to sit for some period of time. Plus he is in business of making a profit.

I did this same thing last March. I had an '11 that was in excellent condition, about 120K miles, and I had really gone over it recently with maintenance (wp, rad, fluids, everything) and I had it all documented. The only issue (disclosed) was the recirc door was busted. I loved the thing, but I started thinking that I was just beginning to make many mods and I figured I should be starting with something newer with fewer miles. I found a nice '15 down in CT with only 45K, and already had RW wheels and KO2s.

They gave me 29K for my '11 towards the '15. Yes, I could have done a private sale and gotten more. But, then I would have to either float the money that I would eventually get, or wait for it to sell, which means I would have missed this nice truck that I ended up with. Trading in is all about convenience, and they know that. No regrets on my part.

And a Mudder eventually bought my '11 a few weeks later from the dealer, I think he ended up paying mid-30s.

One thing to consider as well, is that some dealers send trades with over 100k right to auction. I have been told that this is due to the limited financing options and higher rates for the higher mileage vehicles. This might not be universal, but it has been my experience in all of the fleet vehicle purchases and trades that I have made.

What color combo? Any rust?

They’re offering you a pretty standard wholesale price. You could easily get $3000-$4000 more on here within a week or two. Heck, at a minimum, offer it at $29000 or $30,000 on here and it will be gone within a week. A Mudder gets a good deal and you get a quick sale and a little more than the dealer would have given, plus a much better feeling about it.

$27k isn't offensively low from a dealer, but as everyone else has stated you're likely to do better on your own - assuming of course your truck is immaculate, without rust, and with a good Carfax and service history. I know 2 people lately who have purchased 200s with 100-110k miles for $26-28k, so their offer isn't as off the mark as it first sounds. If your tax rate is 10% (going off your math), you'd have to sell the truck private party for at least $29.7k to be indifferent, but that also means the time, effort, and hassle to do it as opposed to giving the keys to the dealership. The flip side is, that means you'll have to buy the new truck from the dealer (unless they allow you to do some fairly complicated stuff which is not unheard of just not common), so unless they happen to have your exact dream truck for a great price (unlikely) you are likely to overpay on the purchase. These kind of decisions are never quite as straightforward as they appear at first glance, so consider all options before making a decision.

Here in MA, the Lemon Law applies to most used car sales, even those between private parties. So there is something to be said for selling to a dealer, who isn’t going to try to come after you for a Lemon Law claim.

I'd keep it. Not big enough difference between the 2011 and 2018/19 to justify the cost, assuming your are looking at the new 200s. Plus the new 200s have the 8 speed tranny that appears more trouble prone and is not time tested. IMHO.

Thanks all. The fact that I get close to $3k in tax savings on trade bridges the gap and makes the sale process easier. Not sure what I will do. I'll let everyone know. Thanks for the input!

Here it is 6%. So if you buy new for $80k and no trade, sales tax is $4,800. If you buy new for $80k with $40k trade-in, the taxable amount is $40k so sales tax is $2,400.

So even if you could sell your trade-in for a couple grand more than what the dealer is giving you, it might not save you much money over trade-in in the end.

Yeah, our sales tax is 10%. The best was Missouri as far as trade in tax credit. They give a credit when you sale the car privately and buy a new one within a limited period of time (but MO has a use tax that more than made up for it). We have high sales tax in WA but no income tax. Totally worth the trade off.

I don't really want to sell it to a Mud member as I've had a glitch with the HVAC twice. The 4 zone gets stuck on and the drivers temp control gets stuck as well. It starts working again within a day. If the HVAC/Nav unit is crapping out it would be a good time to trade in. Everything is working fine now. I found a couple very low mile 13-15 rigs for reasonable dealer prices and one 16. I'll be paying a good chuck to get a new rig, but all with less than half the mileage.

Sounds like you actually know what to do. Having just spend a long time looking for what you want, be careful with the lower-priced dealer rigs. I've seen plenty with no maintenance history. If it was a lease with no maint record, I would pass. There are a couple in CA that look good... I think it is better to find the car for sale that you want, regardless of the asking price, and then negotiate to the right price.

Holy crap.

Sales tax in NH is 0%. Nada. Zilch. I don't even think of this stuff anymore.
