....is a mess.

Its great the info, support, and all that jazz...but its a nightmare to find anything.

Someone (mod), nneeds to go through every section or start over sort of and create sub-section withing the models. I want to read and learn more about the 70, but unless I know what I'm searching for, I can't really easily find any info on it. Say I want to know about the electrical on a 70 specifically, or if it has a timing chain or belt. Theres no engine or electrical sub section to easily search in.

I'm becoming a convert to these cars and am really enjoying seeing peoples rigs and reading about these things...but I hate trying to filter through all the stuff trying to find specifics.

Take a look how this is laid out:

http://www.pocuk.com/forums/index.php

I know I know, but its the old haunt for when I was/am driving the Pudge.

But look at it, DIY, Electrical, EGR only, Biodiesel even.

If I want to know how someone mounted a gerry can themselves or how to clean a BJ74 EGR (if they have one...I have no idea as I can't find an FAQ on this car on this page) I would know exactly where to look.

Anyway, just a frustrated suggestion to make this place more easy to navigate and really enjoy.

We have stored a bit on the diesel forum regarding your model. Much of the information you seek is in factory service manuals which seems to remain as Toyota property and not legally available on the net until its obsolete.

Their was some manuals on birfield.com which was suitable for many jobs but lately they seem to have disappeared.
There is also the Toyota EPC which can be downloaded from various sites

I just wish I could read peoples experiences wrenching on their beasts without always resorting to the search. If I want to read about people pulling gooey EGRs or changing airfilters or who knows what...I'd like to go to that section and scroll, just reading whatever happens to look interesting. The diesel 70 doesn;t even have a buyers guide. I'm doing this blind based on what I know about cars in general, offroad, and a few tidbits here. But I want to know things like, is this a belt or chain, if a belt hwat the replacement cycle, is it a selg destruct when it goes, is there any warning? Do these have notorious autotrans with problems. Are the seat brackets spot welded on...who knows what I want to know, but I sure as hell can't find it any reasonable manner.

On a side note....
Why is it, the different JApanese rigs are built like tanks and the US vehicles are toys? I mean, the Ford Bronco is a great piece....but the body armor undernneath is little more than heat sheild and nevermind factory option front and rear lockers. The US is said to be the birthplace of the SUV and recreational offroad, why are the car complete junk? It can't be the terrain. Japan is a mostly urban or atleast paved country...why do they have all this heavy duty stuff? I mean, if my dad came over here to JP and saw the car I'm looking at, he'd die. Hes an old time offroad guy...his rig was an old Burma Jeep Highhood with the goofy solid foam bullet proof tires and V8 swap. But this, off the showroom floor car, is unlike anything standard in the US...with exception of the true hummer and possibly the illfated MUTT. I don't get it......

For engine advice, go to the Diesel FAQ, that is really handy if you don't like searching.
Cheers,
Deny

I agree - it is a mess, no idea how to clean something up that is this big though - and there is so much non content and bickering as well - would be nice to see things stream lined an more professional.

I can tell you it's tricky.

I was hoping we could have user driven FAQ in the 70 section. As really I don't know whats 70 series worthy for FAQ. But very few people stepped forward with ideas, so I canned the FAQ.

FAQ's take huge amounts of effort and time.

Have a look at the FAQ in the 80 series section. It's by far the best on here.

I did the FAQ for importing in the diesel section. That was a lot of time too.

I mod three sections. The diesel one, 70 section and the diesel parts section. All of them have co-mods. Unfortunately they are absent at this time. So I run out of time to do the "work of FAQ's". Beanz2 is a great resource and I hope he comes back soon.

Romer has put a ton of time in to creating that faq. Sure it'd be nice to do that here but I understand the time and effort that take to put forth that kind of info in one faq. Many forums are different and if you spend time heavily in one the other seem so different and it takes time to get used to others. Compounding the issue is the variation of 70 series cruisers out there.

I don't always agree on how things are but BB has done a good job of maintaining this area upon inception and overall woody for the site.

I agree with louis though there needs to be more tech. A thread like this would have lasted 1 or 2 posts in the 80 section before it was moved out to chat (or maybe the help corner).. which is what this is.

Some of the info you seek can be found here- http://cruisers.bitwalla.com/

Personally, I like the search. I do wish it would allow 2 letter words, (ie, AC) and exact strings via quotes (ie, "BJ70 starter") and boolean searching (ie, BJ70 AND "brake cylinder" NOT clutch). BB, what would need to be done to do this? Think Brian will go for that?

I reported this post so maybe woody can respond. I dunno, but have wanted to not include things in my search too.

Generally if you have been on here a while the search works really good. As you kinda know the regulars and who said what and when...

Yah part of the problem with this 70 section too is how small it is. There isn't a depth of threads on here like the 80 section. Also the 80 section has guys doing large build ups and documenting it. It's just plain bigger. The 70 section is barely scratching the surface of 70 users worldwide. It might get bigger in the future.

I would just like to know more about this car in general. Searching is great, IF you know what you're searching for. I don't have a car and have no idea what to search for. I would like to just scroll through peoples experiences and not have to think if I'm looking for EGRs or kickdown cables.

To answer some key questions...
Does the BJ74 have an EGR? Is it rebuildable/cleanable?
Does the BJ74 have a timing chain or belt? If a belt what is the change time? DOes the engine self destruct when it goes? Is there a chain upgrade if it is a belt? Are there any signs of a tired belt?

I dont think it has a EGR .

The timing is gear driven and it lasts and lasts and lasts.

In fact once your landcruiser 13BT diesel is tuned right ,there is not much to do except change oil and filters and have the injectors done every 4-5 years.
Sorry, but it aint one those engines that you need to wrench on every weekend so you can get to work Monday:D
The B group of diesels are the most widely diversified of all the Toyota diesel engines.
They are used in the Dyna truck,Coaster bus,Toyota forklifts as well as a stationary engine for refridgeration and power generation.Probably there is a B diesel in a tractor somewhere also.

This site gives some good blow up engine and body pics but the part numbers are obsolete.

No problem. I don't think many people here mind helping to answer questions. Over the years there are 9 designations. 70,71,73,74,75,76,77,78,79's some in both light and heavy duty. And probably double the engines both gas and diesel depending on the market. Makes it a tad more complex...

If you were to split out the prado / 2L series, then the 70 series forum would be fairly desolate.

it wouldn't be bad to split it (or even the 40 forum) to:

-70 series hardcore / mods
-78 series (2L, 2LT, 2LTE, Prado)
-70 series general
-70 series technical
-70 series build-up threads

- 40 series hardcore / mods
- 40 series technical
- 40 series troubleshooting
- 40 series build up threads

or even have a general "troubleshooting: need help NOW section". the threads can be moved or deleted every other month or so.

Probably a good place for someone who has broken down, called a buddy and had them put up a post for them without taking the time to search hundreds of threads on "dead engine". could be reserved for specific, need real answers ASAP sort of things. Might cut down on the "what years did the eastern european 25 series come in pantone #45 blue? just wondering. . ." threads.

OT: has anyone notices that all the arab videos on the news show people being driven around in a 77?

I think we should have more tech articles saved in the sticky's . Articles on engine swaps, body work and common electrical problem checklists.
However, we cant cover every base and that is what the forum is for.
