Thinking Of Intercooling My 12ht

I am formerly of Bend, OR as well. I just put an intercooler on my 85 BJ70. I went with a 29" wide, 9" tall, 3" thick intercooler from CXRACING off of ebay. My turbo hoses, came from www.turbohoses.com. With a diesel it is essential to buy the "hub hoses" to absorb engine vibration and movement. It cost me 200 buck to have a quality muffler shop run mandrel bent tubing. This made a huge difference in power and egts.
I am guessing the original poster of this thread is the fellow who talked withme in the Steens at the hot springs about 2 years ago?

SURVEYOR,
Thats great info thank you. I would love to see a pic of your set up.

I did some measuring last night and I will be able to move my rad and shroud back 1" with no trouble. Now will there be any trouble doing that? All fo the info given has been great thank you. I like the subaru set up but turbo lag is something I need to educate myself on. I have the room under the hood. thank you all

Hey Johnnyporp

the turbo lag thing is bandied about all the time and from what I can gather it is most likely to occur with oversize, over long pipes going into an over large intercooler which might take a second to two or three to get up to boost in extreme cases.
The other way it occurs is with an undersize turbo?? I am sure plenty of people know a lot more about it than me!

My main concern with the subaru set-up is that the intercooler might be to small and be a source of restriction in the turbo set-up although looking through the fins on the intercooler it seems pretty open and free flowing.

Anyway, as I mentioned before the bottom line for me is ease of fitting pipes and radiator and I guess if it is crap I can easily take it all out again.

One day i will get it sorted and let you know how it goes.

cheers
Gerard

so am I right, hasn´t anybody put a front mounted air to air intercooler in a 60?

Seems to me that there is at least enough space in front of the radiator for a decent sized cooler, plumbing might be a bit tricky but by no ways un-doable, or am I wrong there? :)

I haven't found one yet in all my internet wanderings. Bob

GERARD, Thanks for the info. I think i have narrowed my search down to a saab 9000/900 or Volvo 240 intercooler both are available at the local yard for a good price )well less than a arm and a leg). After some searching on this site several have used them and the fit looks good. Nowore research on adding electric cooling fans or keeping the current set up. Any thoughts masses feel fre to chim in.

Hi Johnny

You have probably seen these photos from a older HJ60 intercooler post by Haffi. It is a big interccoler and replaces the grill completely on a 60 series. sorry about the crappy photo quality, had to resize them

The Crusaders are doing just fine and may be up for win number six or is it seven for the Super 14 rugby crown!

good luck with the cooler, I am very interested to see how the saab volvo option turns out as I heard that people had tried the volvo route.

cheers
Gerard
