i drive a sprung over 60 as a daily driver...its loud and slow but i love it...i got to drive in a 40, it was loud and so as well.. think it depends on the type of person.. i rather drive my cruiser than anything else..but what i think you should do is keep the 80 and pick up a 40 for cheap and fix it... make it your own...someday i want to get another rig to go with my 60 and i want it to be a 40...(maybe as a daily driver)

never get rid of a cruiser just get another one to go with it...

You could always find someone in Tulsa, OK with a FJ40 with a V-8, 6 point familiy cage (finally got it in last week), Premier racing seats and a bunch of other crap who would like to get into a 4 dr cruiser....

I love daily driving my FJ40. I've fiddled with it getting it to run as it should, but it is primarily stock and is fun to drive. It gets 16 mpg around town (15.7 on today's fillup). It isn't all that noisy anymore, now that things are as they are supposed to be. And I know every tiny bit of it (except the PO's wiring job).

:D

here it comes, and it pains me.

i love my 40, but it's no where near nice enough to do 'stuff' in (too much 'gas' smell).

i walk to church rather than drive (it's not that far, but you get my drift), i have yet to take a girl out in it on a date, always end up borrowin one of my buds' cars or something like that.

also, i'm gettin a job this summer that is out of walkin distance, so i am now having to toy with the idea of a beater car so that i can get some serious work done on the 40 while i'm out of class.

there is always goin to be stuff to be done on a budget cruiser that will take more than just one night. look at all these guys' project build ups. it takes em months/years sometimes. given that's a different situation, but it stills proves a point.

plain and simple, i'd keep the 80 and get it runnin well, and go for the 40 a little bit later on.

(but a trade for me wouldn't be all that bad :D, cept i couldn't live with myself and all that 'inside car stuff' in the 80, like carpet and a radio, ha ha)

Jonathan, vent your gas cap. I'll bet your "smell" goes away.

With that gas smell check you tank for rust.. The PO of my 40 decided to patch the rust holes in the bottom of my tank with bondo.. I would get so high driving then i saved up and got a poly tank.. Its nice..

Not to offend any 40 owners but it sounds to me like you would be taking a step backwards replacing an 80 with a 40.

I have several vehicles and my 80 would be the last one to go.

That being said I like 40's and 55's and I want a 55 right now but I would NOT sell my 80 to do it.

As an owner of a 62 with no experience with either of the cruisers you're considering, may I add my .02 cents. I'd expect that the 40 would be easier and less expensive to work on but wouldn't be as reliable considering they're older rigs. For mild off road use, the 80 will be more than up to the task and will take you there in much more comfort than a 40. Hang on to it!

Not having an 80, I can only speak from a limited perspective, but I do believe 40s, once fixed up, are extremely reliable vehicles. And, while I hate to disagree with Dan, I will have to say that around here, 80s are as common as fleas on Junk's Momma's hind end, while Daily Driver 40s are unique and have a fun factor that 80s cannot achieve. Hell, you can't take the roof off!

A guy up here recently bought a 78 40 in great shape to use as a DD. You could tell he was in love, because even from behind you could see the smile from ear to ear.

id be torn to get rid of any of my cruisers, 80, 40, or the 60.
when it comes to most fun to drive Id have to go with the 40, however its also been the most trouble to drive also (lights going out four miles back on a mountain road, etc.). Fixed that with a new harness, other problems can be fixed.
If I was to get rid of any of them, would have to be for either the same model in better shape, newer or a 70 series, ya right :o
If your just looking to get rid of your 80, maybe look into upgrading to 94 or newer with lockers and keep your eye out for a good deal on a 40.
You can never have enough cruisers.
