Thermostat housing: PO Mod?

Can anyone tell me why the PO did this to my thermostat housing? Threaded cap with a hole drilled into it in the direct to pump exit port. It IS a mod, isn't it? I assume it slows the circulation somewhat when the thermostat is closed, and directs a little more coolant back through the radiator when it is open. But is it good? And should I leave it that way?

It looks like you have a housing from a '75 and later FJ40/55 w/o the oil cooler. The PO probably replaced the original with the one that is there and plugged the hole to use it.


That's what it looks like to me anyway.

Sniper: I don't understand. What's an oil cooler? Is it in the water pump? Why would that have anything to do with the thermostat housing? The nut has a hold drilled into it, so it isn't plugged. The hose goes like normal to the water pump. It just doesn't have the original diameter, so the flow is restricted. I've checked out later housings, which do look like that; they just don't have a bolt head in them!

Some engines have a water-to-oil oil cooler mounted on the RH side of the engine block. One of the bibs that feeds the cooler comes off the housing the other off of the water pump.

My bad. I thought that the threaded ruducer was a plug. It is odd that it is restricted.

So the standard hose that goes there doesn't fit?

Sniper, the standard hose goes where the standard hose goes. The ONLY reason I can discern for the plug was to reduce the diameter of the outflow from the standard, roughly 3/4 inch to about 3/16 inch (I've already drilled it out a little in that picture).

I see about the oil cooler. Only went with 2Fs. Yeah, this housing is just like other early housings. No oil cooler pipe.
