I finally got my truck back to moscow after a very fun day yesterday and the entire last week.

A little re-cap last week driving over to seattle to hang out I grenaded my tranny in my 84 xtra cab around ellensburg. I was lucky that my room mate is from there so I was able to get it to his friends house. I then headed over to seattle picked up a tranny went back on sunday to install it but go figure didnt work. I needed a transfer case. Found one in Eugene OR, so my dad picked it up on friday and met me in ellensburg.

Saturday came and my dad met me up there at 11 to start working on this thing. We got the tranny in no problems went in real easy took about 1 1/2 hours to get it done. I thought great going to be home in time to get my drink on. Well 15 miles outside of ellensburg my radiator blew up on me.

Called my dad who was in yakima heading home and he was going to try and find a new one. After going through the ghetto of yakima to a junkyard he found one and drove all the way back up so we could put it in. Got that in and by this time it is 7:30 pm, so I jsut wanted to get home now. All was going well crusing along at 60 the whole way (still didnt trust the tranny). Was starting to make some plans around colfax get the night started.

Well half way between colfax and pullman the new radiator blew on me leaving me stranded again. Called my buddy and he came and we towed for about 20 miles all the way back to my house. Passed about 6 cops all slowing down looking at what we are doing. Thought for sure we were going to have to talk to them but they didnt care and just kept right on going.

After all of that fun the pile of junk is sitting outside my house waiting for a new radiator. The disapointing part was thinking I had some funds for new gears but that went out the window after having to buy a new tranny, xfer case, and two radiators.

If anybody has a decent radiator around the pullman/moscow area or even spokane I might be interested in it. Sorry for being so long but glad that yesterday is over.

The first one just blew the top tank not that bad so I am thinking or hoping they can replace that one. The second one, more then 3/4 of the bottom tank blew open it was amazing the cloud of steam it produced. Couldnt see the truck behind me.

 Why are you ending up with so much pressure in your coolant system? I can see the possibility of a bad radiator from a yard, but two blown radiators makes me wonder. Did you blow a head gasket or is something blocking coolant flow so it boils? I'd seriously consider doing a full cooling system check.

Can a head gasket blow two tanks on two radiators? The first one had a small hole in it so that one was no big suprise. I was working on replacing it but had to spend all of my money on the transmission. But the second one blew after 2 hours of driving. Something could have came loose and clogged it up. The junkyard that it was bought at was a little sketchy I guess so dont know the quality.

I looked in the oil for some water but there is nothing and the truck starts and runs fine so hopefully it isnt a head gasket.

Adam, I'll look around and see what I can come up with. My advice in the meantime would be to try and find a radiator shop that will talk to you about what you have going on. I have one here that disassembles, hottanks, rebuilds, repairs whatever the hell is wrong. There might be one down there.

Side note: I wish you were here yesterday. I went snow wheeling with a buddy and it was friggin sick where we went on 5-7' of snow. :grinpimp:

If only I had a truck I would have been there in a heartbeat. Or I could have taken your other rig. What about that canopy?

Both of the radiators are at a shop right now getting inspected see what he says.

Maybe the cap was stuck and not releasing the extra pressure? I looked at the oil and there is no water or white stuff under the cap. It ran so well the entire time up til it blew and now I can go and start it with no problem and it runs great. Im going to change the thermostat flush the entire system and with a new radiator hopefully everything will be in the past.

The canopy is yours. She asks that you 'pay it forward'. Let me know when you're able to come up. Her new one will be here next month and she wants to wait until then. My 60 wouldn't have gone where we went, it weighs too much. John was in his SFA Toy truck (geared 228:1) on 37" IROK radials. I took the 40 on 37" MT/Rs. That was a friggin blast. My Toy mini is almost done. Seeing where/what John could do in his truck makes me want to build mine very similarly. :D

I can't wait to hear what the outcome is with your radiators/caps/etc.

"she" and "pay it forward" I guess I could do that. Just let me know when. I will be out of here on the 10th so anytime before then I can come up.

Once I figure out what is going on my plan is to have mine on 37's and with the extra transfer case I have, dual cases will be going in soon.

A little update got the radiator back all welded up and looking good. Did some checks to see if it wasnt obivous the head gasket was gone. All was looking good.

Got the radiator on filled her up went to start acted like there was no compression. I unplugged some stuff so checked everything everything looks good. Cap up the radiator cranked for a little bit and there was pressure. Great so the head gasket is leaking and creating pressure. Checked a few more things pulled spark plugs and it looked like a little bit of water and coolant were spraying out of the number 1 cylinder. Checked the radiator and it smells like gas.

So now it looks like I have to replace the head gasket in this thing. First it was a transmission, then a couple of radiators, now a head gasket.

How hard really is it to change the head gasket on a 22r?

Anybody want to buy a 84 bobbed, locked, and newly painted but needs a head gasket?

I figure I will just take it in and have it resurfaced. Might as well be on the safe side.

When I crank it over it seems like there is no compression blowing the head gasket would cause this correct.

Got the head off tonight in about 1 1/2 hours took a lot less time then I thought. Glad I did this becuase there was about an inch of coolant in the 2 and 3 cylinder. The head gasket was cooked and it smelled burnt while I was taking it apart. Taking the head in to get resurfaced and probably re do the valves jsut to make sure they didnt get cooked. Might go for the port and polish to get more power :p :p

Hehehehehehe. You said, "head".

Glad it didn't take you too long and things went smoothly.

Smooth for now tearing down is always the easy part. Putting it back together could be fun. I'm a little worried about getting the timing back right so I dont screw up the valves with the pistons.

I zip-tied the chain to the sprocket at the top so it wont move but I pulled it off and I went to see if it would slip back on but it was short and I couldnt get it back to where it should be. Should I be worried that something is off or just need to wiggle and shake it up to the right spot?

So this story just never ends and the head is crap now. There is a little pitting into the chamber, none of the valves retain pressure, and it is warped terribly.

They said about $500 for a new head is this reasonable or can I get better? I am going to change the rings also since it got hot and I am in this far.

Anybody know of a 22r head or entire engine that is for sale? This truck is just killing me new tranny now pretty much a new engine. At least it will be brand new after this.
