I measured out for a T350, AA adapter and 4 speed case in my 79 FJ-40 and I was going to have a 18" driveshaft.

Not too short, the only problem was that the 79 has the fuel tank under both seats and it was going to be in the way.

Orion it is......

Hey Woody what happened to the trans out of the van your motor came from?

Might help you decide where to get and what to get.

that trans went back to Tom, otherwise it would be an EASY choice...

decided on the 700R4, may rebuild it myself (thanks orangefj45 for the quote), and mate it up with the D300.

with some luck, the truck will be stripped and ready for winter projects by the middle of next week :D

well, i'm feeling a little generous here, so i'll sponsor you for the overhaul kit. just a small token of my sincere appreciation for all the work you put into this site, the tech articles, info, cruiser assistance club,............. .
as far as i'm concerned, you've made our "comunity" a better place and that's something we should all strive to do.
does that sound like some serious ass kissing, or what?!(flamesuit on, fawkers :flipoff2: )

let me know what else you're gonna need and i'll send the kit along with it.
thanks again woody!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

I don't yet....and 2wd or 4wd won't matter since I'm gonna run an aftermarket output shaft anyways.

is it a K case? georg can confirm, but I believe the later K cases are strongest, and ya KNOW how abusive I am....lol

I am still in the investigating stage, but will a 2wd 700r4 mate to an atlas with adapter? I have one of those from a chevy van, but thought I needed a 4wd version. George? anybody?

My 700r4 came from the Camaro the LT1 came out of. A new output shaft and a 3/4" thick adapter from Sunray Engineering and I had a D300 style output.

I guess I mean yes, a 2wd can work on an Altas.

that's the adapter and output I intend to use. SG, it DOES depend on the adapter you wanna use tho, most adapters include a spud shaft designed to work with the stock 4wd output shaft....the Sunray adapter replaces the output and doesn't use a spud. IMO, while yer rebuilding, that makes it the easiest, less chance for spline-slop, and the shortest possible drivetrain.

Lance also noted that a K case is preferred....Lance, you gonna register on here someday or can we just keep talkin s*** about you? :flipoff2:

Aww man, here we go... :)

Once the tailshaft housing is off a 700s a 700 (2vs 4) if your going to short shaft it any way. K case is prefered.

Now that I registered let the real s*** talking comence, damn Texas Jeep guys.........

How do you identify a K case? Is it marked on the case or do you go by which vehicle it is from? I'm going in the same direction and didn't know about the different cases...

the K is cast into the bellhousing area of the case, about 3-4" in height, topside of the passengerside....

I've seen them cast on 350's as well, and 350's also have a HD version which is better yet.

only difference in the "K" case is that it uses a cast aluminum inspection cover held on by 6 machine screws versus the normal case using a stamped sheetmetal cover held on by 4 self tappers.
the K case strengthens the entire assembly only when used in conjunction with the brackets sandwiched under the engine mounts and the strutts running from the inspection cover to the engine mounts.
no other mechanical or strength advantages whatsoever.

FWIW - my 700R4/AA/Toy RF1A is only 1" longer than the 465/205 it's replacing... :D

I can't wait... 59:1 before the TC multiplication... this, up from the 53:1 I had with the 465/205.. (and a flat, smooth belly skid!!)

Regarding the mounts... I'm using the 2wd mount on the tranny, and making a custom mount off the Toy case tied together, which will be bolted to the frame.

P.S. My hardware is all metric, despite the P/O swearing he used 7/16 bolts... M10!!! 7/16 works, but can/will strip out the threads when you torque it down.
