Well not alot of replies on the trail safe seals and not alot of threads so here is the beginning my story. - Rig is on 37's, gets abused has part time kit, low tcase gear set and manual hubs on front.

I had to truss/straighten the knuckles on my 80 due to both sides being bent 3 - 5 degrees on the top of tire before we go wheeling memorial 2019 here in a week.

The Pass side was a Marlin seal (the one I am sure Trail Gear got the idea from) that Marlin no longer sells. Probably has been installed for 4 years and 20K miles and I've broke 2 birfs on that side never replaced the seal. No birf soup - I only replaced seals due to the heat of welding on the axle's to straighten them.

The Driver side was OEM yota, birf soup, probably had 290K on it, who knows as I have never opened that side up and I've never replaced it in the 8+ years of ownership.

I searched High and Low for the front seals in non OEM (yes I have read OEM only). Found some from the local parts store that are really close National part # 7331 I think. They where close as they where the same dimensions as a factory seal, but they went in the axle and could be pulled out by finger so that would not work. I ordered an OEM Part # from amazon and waited and tried to install them Monday night. Driver side went in hard and dented the outter ring of the seal and slightly deformed it. Pass side would not go in and deformed the seal (no problems with burr's or anything where the axle seal sits. I believe these were TOS3 as a part # and came from China. Defiantly not OEM toyota even though they were "advertised" as such.

Anyways, I ordered the trail gear seals from Summit Monday as I am in a time pinch to put the axle together for next weekend. Got the seals Last night and they looked almost identical to the old marlin seal I had and went in with zero issues.

Got most of the axle back together last night and I'll report back when and if they fail.

Anybody used these? Long term reports? I had birf soup again on the driver's side after only a few thousand miles. Not sure what could be causing it. I've used OEM inner axle seals all along. Finally decided to try something different and went with TG's Trail Safe inner axle seals. We'll see if they last any longer.

I also went with their Trail Safe knuckle wiper kit which has heavy duty rock rings to protect the seals. My OEM backing plate was bent pretty bad. This kit replaces the OEM felt/rubber wipers with a thick double-sided polyurethane seal. The entire setup feels really beefy. A few friends run these on their mini trucks and have nothing but good things to say.

Birf soup, story of my life

OEM seal was warped at the top. Not sure what could have caused this. I'm wondering if I damaged it while removing the Hellfire knuckles - with these knuckles the birf won't come out through the opening. You need to remove the knuckle then remove the birf.

Knuckle wipers and rocks rings..BEEFY! Pay no mind, had it on backwards here. The inner silver ring goes on the outside. The gold ring goes towards the inside.

TG axle seals are pure trash. Never again. Heavy duty rock rings and wipers are great on the other hand and are still doing great.

I've never run them so purely from what I've told, but never heard good feedback on a full-time 80

cool... I've still got an OEM seal, just worried that this new mechanic might face the same issue as the previous one that's had 2 goes at it. Anyway, I'm probably overthinking it.. the new mob seem to know what they're doing, so once it's all apart, they'll be able to see if there's a groove on the shaft, and at that point in time we can discuss the best course of action.. whether that's driving the oem seal in a bit further or sleeving it. Those seem to be the 2 more popular remedies. Apparently the Terrain Tamer ones are a little more forgiving for wear as well (can't verify 100%).
