So this isn't intended to prove 2ndgen wrong as there is no question that the FSM lists the correct way to test the gauge..... Which I totally agree with. But this is intended to test my own recollection of what I thought worked for me on a vehicle that I do not care if the factory temp gauge ever works again as i run aftermarket. And I will apologize now this vehicle sees more mud than pavement hands down therefor the mud on the dash! Sorry I am only willing to stand out there for 5 minutes in the cold tonight but here is with the sending unit unplugged:

and here is with the green and yellow sending unit wire grounded solid for 5 minutes:

SO my 2 cents and take it for the one penny its worth.... if you are fed up with your gauge and your on your way to the parts house to buy aftermarket gauges no longer caring about drilling holes in the underside of your dash to mount them then here is something to try. If you have a nice vehicle that you DO NOT WANT TO RUIN your temp gauge absolutely follow the FSM!!!! However if these two test pan out then I think it has to be the ground wire between the two is making partial ground. the other thing is I accidently had NO FUSE in the fuse box and a test light hooked to the same battery ground and stuffed into a powered plug AND the sending wire grounded out and some how the gauge red 1/4 hot for a minute......... Ok that confused the heck out of me too and I couldnt get it to mimic it again...... However I unhooked the test light, added a fuse, and it slowly climbed to pegged. I do realize that a full ground does not equal 115 24 ohms +1.3 ohms/ - 1.8 ohms so this is not at all a perfect test at all
Again if you try this and your vehicle catches on fire and burns your yota and house down 2ndgen warned you!
