I got a 1987 FJ-60. The tachometer is stuck on two. Hasent worked in years. I bought a replacement part and was wondering if it is too difficult to install it myself? It seems like I might be able to just pop out the instrument cluster and do the wiring myself, but I'm not 100% sure what I'm doing? Anybody have any suggestions or a link to instructions?

Thanks!

The tach it self is two screws (back), and two plexi clips hold on the glasss/plexi. Not sure what you have there for repair, but I beleave the guts are held in with two screws.....If you have trouble...I have a couple spares..

I just need to swap out the tach with the replacement I bought. There are two screws on the dash holding the instrument cluster in, do I simply pop it out with the force of my hands once the screws are removed? and once I do pop it out, can i just replace the old tach with the new one?

thanks!

Yes but if its like other series landcruisers ,you will have to undo the speedo cable and unplugg some wiring so you can pull the cluster out.

yeah the some other cables might need to bee pulled first, also your tach may still work for mine i just had to tighten and loosen the screws on the face of the gauge until the neddle would move nicely.

It's simple man. bust out that phillips head screwdriver and you'll be finished in about 10 minutes. :D

If I remember, it's four screws for the whole instrument assembly, disconnect the speedo cable, and the other instrument plugs (make a mental note of the plugs before disconnecting them all) then unscrew the tach (4 screws) and put the new one in. Done. :grinpimp:

you mean from under the hood?

Yeah, under the hood, passenger side wheel well, there are two wires with green male/female plugs that connect to the ingintor. One of them is for the Tach. Sometimes owners disconnect them here. A faulty tach will cause the engine to hesitate, so disconnecting it is sometimes the easiest fix. Mine continued to run poorly even with a replacement tach, so I just leave it disconnected at the ignitor.

I successfully swapped in the replacement tach. Two screws on the top of the cluster (going up from the scoops in the dash, three screws along the bottom. After all the screws are taken out, the instrument cluster just falls right out. Unplugged the lights and wires from the back of the cluster. Unscrewed the old tach, replaced and screwed in the new one. Reconnect wires, popped the tach back in. Works great!
