Swingaway Hitch Carrier v2

I'm glad I saw this. I'm looking into upgrading to a hitch mounted tray bike rack. Definitely need to get some kind of swingout. KUAT was on the short list. I need to be able to haul 4 bikes. Any recommendations? I currently have a Yakima fullswing but it's really hard on the bikes and is not all that easy to use.
There is a post on page 2 with the 1up RakAttach showing it clears perfectly fine. It’s 100 bucks more than the Kuat but looks to be worth it. It can also be flipped to swing to either side. Might try selling my Kuat V2 to get one.

just to clarify, it's the RakAttach 2.0 that clears. I owned the 1.0 and it hits the tail gate.

I am going with the 1up as well, based on this thread..

this thread helped me so I am just adding another option

I ended up going with a Kuat Pivot 2.0 on my GX470. thanks for the rec guys.

Is that a custom basket you made? Looks interesting

I'll probably start a new thread this weekend after I get some pictures and make a few adjustments and test a few things, but I just got my RigD Rambleswing. I can confirm that it clears the tailgate and is SUPER STOUT. I'll be running this with my 4 bike OneUP rack, but surely it would work for any hitch mounted accessory.

yes, I wanted to make the basket sit closer and higher. the clearance isn't that great as the hitch extender I used is pretty long. but it's better than a basket that just stick straight out from a hitch.

that's why the Kuat Pivot 2.0 was necessary for this project. I can't open the barn door when there's anything on a basket of any design. so I needed a swing away. so if it swings away, might as well block the door with the basket.

That is very promising!! Looking forward to more detail.

A few teasers of the Rambleswing for now. It easily clears the tailgate in all positions.

Currently it is limited from being pushed in further because it’s hitting the spare tire. In this position, I can get a reduced size locking hitch pin in, but not a full sized pin. This weekend I’m going to loosen the spare (285/70R17) and cheat it forward to make room to move the unit 1/2” closer to the bumper to get a full sized pin in. There’s another hitch pin hole another 1.5” further in, but I don’t think I can move the tire that far. My tire is all the way back right now, so this should represent worst case for folks with big spares.

In this configuration it moves the OneUp 10” further aft than without.

I’m going adjust, test with the full 4 bikes and more this weekend and will report back.

why not chop the tongue? the mechanism that removes rattle doesn't extend to the end of the tongue.

the Rig'd tongues tend to be long, I appreciate that the Kuat Pivot 2.0 tongue is less so.

The wedge on the Rambleswing is at the end of the tongue. So it's not just a straight chop and there may or may not be enough room to chop it without getting into the plate that the center bolt runs through. Certainly doable, but not as simple as just cutting 2" off the length.

I'd love for it to be nearly flush with the bumper, we'll just see how much work that is. I have a welder and a grinder, as well as friends with machine shops, so TBD how much I modify it versus live with it a few inches further out.

Aside from the long tongue, I'm overall very impressed!

oh you need 2" off? there's not enough for that there's maybe an easy half inch on the Kuat Pivot 2.0

pictures below.

EDIT: the Rig'd anti rattle is a different mechanism than what's pictured

Not sure how the wedge works on the Rambleswing. But doesn't its position key off the hitch pin through-hole? If you can locate the hole 2" up, should be able to cut off 2"?

The Wedge on the Rambleswing is a different design than you show.

To effectively shorten it I think you'd have to move the angle back and shorten the bolt, and maybe move the internal wall that the bolt goes through. There might be a little to be gained by milling off some of the back of the wedge block.

I'll get a good look at what is possible this weekend.

for the Kuat Pivot 2.0

there's a bolt that goes through the front side of the tongue and it draws this diagonal wedge backwards as the bolt is tightened and that pushes a foot out that braces the inside of the hitch receiver.

so what this means is the bolt is mounted to a blind tongue. that plate the bolt threads to can't be moved so the mechanism can't really be shifted.

for the rambleswing, you can see in the above photo it's a flat wedge connected to a similar blind tongue bolt

yeah I edited my post, I was speaking on the Kuat Pivot 2.0

I looked into the rambleswing and didn't want to mess around with chopping a new angle. I think the conclusion I came to from looking at pictures of the other Rig'd products was that you couldn't really shorten it enough for my application.

I can't remember exactly what I came up with as the reasoning after looking at the measurements, but I think I concluded that it was not going to meet the minimum tongue length recommended and I might end up deleting one of the pin holes if I cut enough to get the final length (shortened) that I needed.

all in all it was a lot more work on the ramble swing than the Kuat Pivot.

but my car wasn't limited by the tailgate folding down and interfering, which made the Kuat Pivot a more natural choice.

Thanks for the clarification. That's too bad as shortening is pretty important if one wants to maintain some reasonable departure angle.

I wonder if it can be modified albeit with a bit more effort?

There's other styles of hitch tighteners that could be adapted? Maybe something like this

I've always said, with enough cutting and welding, ANYTHING is possible. I'd love for the main tube to be almost touching the bumper if I can.

I'm going to play with the easy fixes first, and see where it gets me without modification. If I have to modify it, I'll go whole hog at it until I get it all the way to the bumper. We'll see how it goes.

for the Kuat Pivot, the tongue is pretty short already, shorter than the rambleswing.

sorry for the confusion, but I went back and edited some of my comments to separate what I was saying about the Kuat Pivot from what was being said about the rambleswing.
