Engine brake here as well!!
Its truly a BEAUTIFUL THING!!

4L60E for me, I lock it in 1st and it engine brakes great!

MSD makes a replacement distributor for the LT1 and I am told the later vented GM
unit can be swapped in.
GMPP also makes a intake that uses a Quadrajet and the older style HEI distributor.
All the junk at the back of the engine is the same under the intake, GM used a stub shaft to run the oil pump off the cam.
The intake is available through Summit Racing for $309 and change.
I will be making a highbred manifold so I can run the small cap electronic distributor.
I am not a fan of the Opti Spark but I am sure it can be made more water friendly with some work, I have all the parts I need to make it and so that's the route I am going.

So, after adding all the associated costs for droppin that lt1 in the van and after getting some sense talked into me by Randall Im gonna just finish er with the motor thats in there and think about swaps further down the line. Dammit Randy. lol

Thanks for all the advice and whatnot.

Having owned, built, and raced an LT1 Camaro over the course of many years (when I was younger) I would never go with another LT1. It's old technology with a piss poor overall design in my opinion. Go with a proven newer generation Lsx, Vortec, etc if you are going through with the hassle and expense of an engine swap.

If you can get it up and running with what you have it will at least give you time behind the wheel while you are planning out your next move.

I am old school, 53 years old. Been playing with things with motors all my life. I must admit that at first all the elctronic controls etc of the newer motors was daunting. Not so much any more.

Bottom line IMHO is this. The only reason NOT TO us the LSX platform in a major swap is Nostalgia. The amount of work to properly do a swap certainly warrants using the best overall platform available. OPINION!!!

The benefits of this platform simply blow any other out of the water. Parts availability for the LSX is HUGE. You can build an entire engine from parts out of any big box store anywhere. Almost all the intakes and exhaust manifolts are interchangeable. HP and Torque can be built at a reasonable cost. These are 350-400K motors if you take care of them. You can pick one up with all harness required, gas pedal if DBW, with around 100K for as little as $1,200.00

I understand you want to use a motor that is available and cheap. Look at the long term because it is a lot of work to do twice.

Good luck with it
