On a related note, while it is all apart, will a 1998 TRD Tacoma axle bolt in place of my original? There is one for sale here.
Yes!
But... there are a few things to overcome. If you use the entire taco axle you will need to address the parking brake cable. The pivot is on three wrong side of the housing. And the cable will be too short where it at attaches to the drums. I lengthened mine with a few inches of cable and some clamps. It is also 60" wide. You gain about 1" per side. Will your tires still fit. They should just be aware.

Option 2. Modify your existing housing to fit the e locker 3rd.

CHECK GEAR RATIO BEFORE YOU BUY IF YOU CAN.

I presume as well that I have to change the front axle for width with a different axle or spacers. Gear ratio is the same if the seller is accurate. he wants $750 Canadian.
I didnt. It seemed to match better that way. Matching width isn't really all that important.

I might be able to test the motor. Bigger challenge will be finding the $750. It looks pretty clean in the photo, like not much salt or off-road use. I've been doing research off and on for gearing and axles. Does anybody know if the '98 TRD e-lockers are pretty much the same on Tacomas to 2016 as well as the FJ cruisers for width and gearing? I assume the 4runners have different spring perches on the axles. And how hard is it to change the gearing from a 4:10 E-locker to something else. There is a good chance I would let this axle sit for a while.

New pix from this evening. Let me know if anything looks stupid. I looked at the driveshafts. I don't think they are changeable. Shackle looks like it will hit the exhaust pipe, but no weight has been applied. About to measure and torque hanger bolts and u-bolts.

I don't see anything wrong. But the red car got my eye.
What year axle and what from. Fj cruisers and 4Runners will be set up for links. And would need brackets cut off and spring peaches welded on. A 98-04 taco axle is probably your best bet. I believe the shocks are set up differently on the 05+ tacos and they may be wider but Im not sure.

It isn't really much/any different to re gear a e locker then any other 3rd member. Older stuff mostly had 4.10 and rare 4.30 gears newer stuff 05+ has some higher ratios like 3.73 or some bs like that. It could be 4.10 though depending on package or options.

Thanks Andy. Red car is a Mustang from California that has been parked for a year. Not sure why. It belongs to the downstairs people. Axle for sale is from a 98 TRD Taco. I may still go have a look, but not until I have the current rear suspension back together.
