Wow, what an amazing time!

The 6th Annual Surf N Turf is now history. Katherine and I want to thank everyone who attended the largest Surf N Turf ever. There is no way to known exactly how many Toyota Land Cruisers, 4WD trucks and FJ Cruisers were on the beach this past weekend but everyone seems to agree it had to be more than 300 rigs! That’s amazing!

Every year Surf N Turf makes me proud to be part of the Land Cruiser community. Everyone is so cool. Everyone is friendly, supportive and happy. It’s hard to imagine another example where such a diverse group of people, drawn together by a common interest, mix and socialize in such a positive fashion. We see people from every walk of life. Young, old, crazy, conservative, poor, rich, wild, mellow, I think we had it all covered. The only groups missing were asshats and jerks.

I realize this isn’t a surprise to most of you but it’s still pretty amazing when you stop to think about it and I hate to take it for granted. It is the reason Surf n Turf is such a success. Everyone I talked to within the group and outside are impressed by the camaraderie and good behavior of our group. Thank you all for being so cool. It matters and keeps the event alive and growing.

This year, there seem to be more families, kids and spouses than ever before. It’s great to see everyone’s kids growing up and some that re now showing up in their own cruisers!

That’s not to say we don’t have the wild and crazy side covered too. We love the “characters” at Surf N Turf. But we notice there are changes here as some of the usual suspects seem to be “growing up” before our eyes. Not to worry, there also seems to be a plethora of volunteers ready and willing to take over the reins as the wild and crazy souls providing our entertainment. Shock and awe, yeah, we still got that too!

During the past six years Surf N Turf has continued to evolve, much as the community itself evolves. The newbies aren’t newbies anymore and each year there are more experienced “dune runners” and “beach campers”.

It seems each Surf N Turf has it’s own flavor and it’s hard to predict what will happen any year. This year, the cool foggy conditions were a bit of a surprise and seemed to keep thing mellower than previous years. However, the damp conditions didn’t seem to dampen anyone’s sprits. Surf N Turf is more of a process than an event and that’s a good thing. We never know what to expect. Like I always say, the tide comes in and the tide goes out, nothing stays the same. Grow or die. It’s pretty clear Surf N Turf isn’t dying.

Katherine and I sincerely appreciate all the kudos and thanks. Thank you. I’ll admit it takes a lot of time and commitment to pull it together. However, it truly is a labor of love and we have a great time doing it. We count everyone as our friend and let’s face it we love a good party!

The fact is we don’t do it alone we have many people helping us. It starts with the SLO locals. Although we don’t have a formal club, there are many dedicated cruiserheads in the San Luis Obispo area that step up to help with the Surf N Turf chores. Every year they work their butts off in the background to make the event fun for everyone. It couldn’t happen without them.

Please bear with me as I thank them and attempt to give you an idea of what happens behind the scenes. First I should thank my lovely wife Katherine who starts her SNT duties by organizing the pre-ordered T-shirts. She continues working throughout the weekend doing a great job of keeping the orders straight. I’m sure you all appreciate that effort when you pick up your shirts. In what has now become another Surf n Turf tradition, Kristina “Desertgirl” once again provided invaluable back-up, giving Katherine well deserved breaks while keeping the shirts flowing. This is a full time job and Kristina’s help is sincerely appreciated.

Of course before all this can start, we have to “move on to the beach”. This happens early Thursday morning when the SLO locals show up at my house to haul shirts, tents, flags, signpost, signs, poles, fire wood and supplies to the beach. I can’t do this myself so a BIG thanks to Andy “Matador98”, Chris “SLOsurfer”, Guy “Pismo62”, Chris “Bluemax”, Miles “Cruzerman350, Joe “joes40”, Jason “Curzr45, Ken “FJ40M4” and Dave “66LV” for helping moving stuff onto and off the beach.

A special thank you is due Scott and Sethzilla who hauled several trailer loads of firewood to keep main camp fire burning strong. Finally, thanks to the many others that happily joined in with chores at the beach. I often ask for help and everyone happily pitches in. We couldn’t do it without you!

Next, I need to mention a couple guys that always come through to kick the event up a notch at no cost to my time or effort. Of course that would be Alvaro “Alvarorb” and Pasquale “Desertdude”. As many of you know, Alvaro organizes the “Sand Chef Competition” on Friday night. This has turned into an awesome event for participants and spectators. The best part for me, besides being a judge sampling all the excellent food, I don’t have to do anything! Alvaro takes care of everything. It also provides a good excuse to get the event started early which allows more time for fun. Thanks Alvaro!

Next up, I want to thank Pasquale for setting up his excellent sound system. Did you notice the head bobbing, foot tapping, yet unobtrusive background music at main camp? How about the PA used during the Sand Chef? That’s all thanks to Pasquale. Again I don’t have to do anything! Thanks for making the main camp such a happening scene! And thanks for putting the Surf N Turf Sign Post together while I was off BS’ing other cruiserheads!

Speaking of main camp and me not doing a thing, I want to thank the “Norcal Wagons” a “Gourmet Cooking Club with a Wheeling Problem” for feeding me and half the free world. Doug, Rick, Roberto, Andy, and others thank you! I’ve finally convinced Katherine we really don’t need to bring food to Surf N Turf.

While I’m thinking about it, thanks to several others who handed me plates of food including abalone, venison, shrimp, steak and more. All I can say is WOW delicious! Keep it coming!

Before you know it, it was Saturday morning and time for something different – the Surf N Turf 5K fun run/walk. We weren’t sure what would happen. I mean come on, a fun run/walk at a cruiser event??? Well it worked! There were about 130 participants! Thanks to everyone that participated in what has to be the first “Cruiser Running Event” in history. Personally, I couldn’t help but crack up at the “mob” running down the beach. In addition to a few serious athletes, entire families, kids and spouses there were a few well known Land Cruiser characters in the mix. I couldn’t help but notice Mickey Rubicon charging off in front of Cruiserdrew at the start. Or Mudrak and DieselBigot huffing and puffing there way across the finish with very respectable times. Dave “FZyGomme” didn’t fool anyone when he dumped a bottle of water over his head and faked a fast finish ala “Rosie Ruiz” of Boston Marathon fame. It was pretty entertaining David.

It was a strange game but it provided a fun way to distribute a wealth of prizes donated by some generous cruiser oriented vendors including ARB-USA, Advanced Adapters, Spector Off-Road and others. Of course the most coveted prize was the $500 American Express Gift Card donated by the FJ Trail Team!

And, it wasn’t just corporate sponsors that donated to the free give away. Sheryl donated a hand made “Surf n Turf Quilt” which DocRoh promised to put top good use. Mickey Rubicon donated 80 Series TREs, David threw in some U-Joints and Katherine made some nice women and kids gift bags. Although we don’t do a traditional raffle, we still like giving free prizes for our cruiser friends!

Shortly after the Fun Run it was time to start the High Noon Poker Run. Once again, I lean heavily on my cruiser brethren. We had at least 4 people at each check point, running two lines. That’s at least twenty helpers! One person of special note is Ross “Woooody”. Ross relieved me from my duties of evaluating hands which allowed me to finally cruiser around and check out the poker run. It was the first time I wasn’t “stuck” at the finish checkpoint. Thanks Ross for doing a great job and for letting me see what happens in the back dunes during the run. My primary direction to the poker run crew was to move everyone through as quickly as possible. And that’s exactly what they did. We started shutting down checkpoints in 1.5 hours with everyone through the last check point in less than two hours! That’s amazing. The winners, high and low hands, took home $600 each!

With the poker run completed we got back to doing what we like best, nothing. It was time for kicking back and checking out cruisers or venturing into the dunes to look for the perfect jump.

Speaking of checking out cruisers, it’s pretty clear our very own SLO local Dave “66LV”and his “Land Cruiser Motor Home” proved to be the most gawked over cruiser at the event. No chrome or metal flake on this machine, just some funky paint and shag carpet. Rumor has it he will be renting it out next year for someone looking for that special Surf N Turf accommodation.

In conclusion, I sincerely want to thank everyone that makes the effort to attend this event. I know we all must prioritize our vacation time and money. This is a big trip for most of you and I appreciate the effort. I only wish I had more time to spend with each of you. Hint: Show up early!

The Land Cruiser Nation Rules!

OK, let's see some pictures and hear some stories!

A BIG Thank You - Jim and Katherine once again for a stellar SnT beach gathering this year. It was a pleasure to be with everyone and help out. I casually mentioned to Jim on Saturday night, that he and Katherine are the only two people I know that can pull off an event this special on the beach. Both Jim and Katherine have a smooth laid back style, as the greet and meet nearly everyone who comes out. That is class in the highest order. ;)

Large thanks to all the NorCal crew who welcome all of us with open arms, and brought along a ton of food... I believe Cruiserdrew said "We set a new world record on the amount of food prepared and eaten" (PabloVTA you cook a mean puerco)

Special thanks to Rick and Tracy for organizing the La Caja China, manning the box for hours, and supplying great food and untensils... Also thanks to Cruiserdrew for carrying the "China Box" on top of his 80 down from Ricks place.

Extra special thanks goes out to my good friend Alvaro, who every year pulls together the great Friday evening Sanchez, shares his laughter, food, and birthday with all of us.

It takes one full year to get all the sand out of all the corners, by then we miss the beach, our landcruiser friends and Surf n Turf... Until next year!

Man I so wanted to be thier this year, one of the best events I have ever been too.

Next year bringing the wife and kids, its part of our holiday plans.

See ya thier Jim, will bring a few more canucks down with me though.

Big Thank You Jim and everybody else who helped put it all together.

This was my wife's first Land Cruiser Event and she had a blast. The reason she came is she saw the post and the write ups on the FJ45 run and wanted to attended something that fun.

I think you had the highest concentration of Beagles on site as well. I counted 10 or so!

The Norcal Wagons webpage has been updated. Here are the pics:

It was BeagleMania I tell Ya!

I think we need to make it next year. A two year hiatus is too long.

Keep the pictures coming.

Surf N Turf 2007
Pismo Beach , California
November 1st to 4th

We left Orange County at 5:30pm on Thursday, way behind my original schedule to leave at noon, but I really wanted my wife to come with me, so I patiently waited for her. We arrived at Pismo by 10:30pm or so. I was pulled over by the rangers at the beach, I was doing 25 miles and the speed limit is 15miles, but the ranger just gave me a verbal warning, what a lucky guy. We missed the food that night, that’s a bummer, but the wife is with me, that’s what really matter.

Next morning, we realized that we could use some leftovers from the night before for breakfast, so we made “arepas”, which is a typical bread from Venezuela and we filled with pork that came out from the “Caja China ”, a new cooking toy for the NorCal group. Knowing the secret ingredient for the Sand Chef competition, we went to town to do some grocery shopping. We had a hard time choosing our menu; we called our relatives (mom, sister and mother in law) asking for help and tips and thanks to them, we finalized our menu.

The Sand Chef Competition is really fun, but stressful at the same time, all eyes are on you. We had 90 minutes to cook two different savory dishes and one dessert, using the secret ingredient in all of them. This year, the secret ingredient was Peppers.

Our main dish was stuffed bell peppers with grounded beef. Luis chopped some onions and other vegetables, we cooked that for a while and then we added the meat with more spices and cooked it some more. Luis was in charge of decoration as well. He decorates the peppers with some cut olives and parsley. The result was awesome. Our second dish was a cream, but we were screwed with that until I asked the Solo team, called the Johnson’s later when Doug’s wife decide to help him for the blending machine. We also borrowed David’s table, thanks for that dude.

When we were done with the main dishes and the stove was released, Carol focused on the dessert. She cooked brown sugar with red wine vinegar and added shopped bell peppers, a green one and a red one, to the mix, for a colorfully result.
Then, using some crackers as a base, Luis put some cream cheese on it and we served the jelly mixture top of it, creating a winner dessert, everyone liked so far.

We finished the “Sandchez” competition with the second place, no bad at all, and we had the blast cooking together. As a learning experience from previous year, this time we save some food in order to share it with the other team members and friends. We ended that night close to the fire and chatting with friends.

For Saturday activities we had the 5 miles run or walk that we missed and the poker run. We had breakfast and unpacked everything out from the car, so we can play over the dunes without loose/flying objects inside the rig. The poker run consist to reach five points all over the dunes. You can follow a map of the car ahead of you to get to the checkpoints and get a stamp on your passport. The best and the worst hand shared the accumulated prize.

When the poker run was done, everyone was released to do wherever they wanted, so most of the guys went to see how other people flew and played on the dunes. The risk of accidents doing this is high, and there is no way we can have an “organized” activity around it, so you have to be prepared and enjoyed the show. This year was not the exception, and some friends rolled over playing on the dunes. That is the price of having so much fun, I guess.

At dinner time, we realized that NorCal guys planed to do a buffet, no one wants to return their food back home, so we don’t cooked anything at all, just appetizers to share and we taste a little bit of everything. It was great. As a closing event, the FJ Cruiser crew installed the big screen and we enjoyed Jay’s videos and Pasquale’s music as a background. We ended the night close to the fire and listening to a SoCal guy singing and playing his guitar.

On Sunday, we didn’t want to leave. We packed Buttercup really slow; we enjoyed some toast bread, nothing fancy this time. We also carried out three bags of trash on the top of my rig. The trash container is close by, so no biggies doing this and helps a lot. We also did some last minute shots over the dunes. In our way home, we stopped in Santa Barbara to say hello to Pablo, and he recommended us a nice place to have lunch, the Brown Pelican, don’t miss it if you are in the area, but the coffee is not what we can expect from a Venezuelan point of view. Alexis was disappointed with his triple shot order.

Thanks Jim, Katherine and all you guys that helped somehow in the event.

Roberto and Carolina .
