such an impresive 2H-T

since we were talking about pistons i thought i'd post this pic of piston from working 12ht

I can easily imagine how 2bar might be bit much if pistons are even near that condition (which they usually are around 500 000kms) :D

You could almost fit another ring in there.

At this point I just wonder if are not better $$$ invested build a 1HD-T .. ? which IP it's actually very fuel cappable .. thought.

The rebuild cost is the same on both engines. Definately the VE pump is a capable pump, but needs to be modified for $$$$ to do more than 138kw @ wheels. The 12HT pump lasts probably 5 times longer and can flow alot more fuel.

As for the piston problem, I had always thought it due to the single stage injection. When they went to the 1HDT they used dual spring/stage injectors and the engine is much quieter as a result due to lower peak cylinder pressures. However after seeing that 2H engines do it as well, the problem appears to be piston metallurgy. This is easy to fix - fixed automatically when using non genuine quality rebuild kit!

I have mentioned that in my opinion 1HDT is a better designed motor and surely alot lighter, however the 12HT is an excellent engine in other ways (better injector pump, no timing belt, easily adjusted valves etc).

It appears that the 12HT can do 300hp on standard internals (pistons excepted). Maybe the 1HDT can do 400, but if you tune for 300 and neither expires as a result, you need to consider other factors beacuse both are up to the task.

Blis, do you know of a Mercedes piston that could be used in a 12HT - I doubt there is enough metal in an OM617 piston to machine in a swirl area...

There was talk on a finnish offroad forum year ago or so but cant remember for life what pistons fit in 12ht and cant seem to find the topic anymore...

Someone should do a bit of detective work and figure what mercedes piston is nearest to 12ht in diameter and other measurements, or someone could always start producing after market pistons with steel insert and reasonable price...

Oh btw, does anyone know what alloy is used in toyo pistons? and maybe that ring problem could be fixed just by better heat treating and thicker top ring?

I believe steel reinforced top ring lands are called "alfin". No idea whether that's a trade-name/brand or the generic description.

just wondering if there are Izusu engines that share much of the jap tech .. those piston can be sourced from Izusu .. ?

actually I'm using an Izusuu cluthc and know there are many other thinks that can be the same ..

Either of these close?
Isuzu 4JB1T is 2.8L 4 cyl direct injection with 93mm bore.
Isuzu 4JG2T is a 3.0L 4 cyl indirect injection with a 95.4mm bore

2H and 12H-T

Bore is 91 mm and stroke is 102 mm, with a compression ratio of 20.7:1.

A bit of a hijack here. Tapage, can you give me ALL details on your Isuzu clutch... pm if you don't want to show them here..

In my sign under Marilu there is a thread with my 2009 upgrades that include my tranny swap .. and all clutch info with part numbers ..

if it's something else that you need to know .. feel free to PM or drop me a mail to tapage at 4x4panama.com
