stupid front locker install question

I've had a lockright in the rear for a while, but now I'm moving it to the front. When installing a lockright in the front diff, do the c-clip retainer cups become paperweights?

I don't see any reason to have them in there, but I wanted to make sure before I put the whole deal back together.

I wondered about this too, but I left them in there because the manual doesn't say anything about leaving them out and they look like they might help center the "driver" on the end of the axel. It works.

Thanks for the reply Pinhead. I've received votes both way, but I decided to just leave them in there and it seems to be working ok so far...
