Well, it is that time to get my struts and shocks replaced. Going to go OEM again. Anyone had them done at a dealer lately, and what was the out the door price? Service Manager not sure of what price it should be.

Is it this guy’s first day? Maybe still being trained.

I thought their little computer gave them an exact price when they put in whatever work was being quoted? Maybe I’m wrong.

Flat Rate Manual says 0.8 hours to do both rear shocks and 1.6 hours to do both front shocks. So by the book it’s 2.3 hours.

Most shops seem to charge 3 hours for the front, which makes more sense to me since the FRM says 1.2 hours for one side or 1.6 for both.

The rears are easy if you’re not in a rust belt state where the top nut has to be cut off.

Shocks are cheap, even OEM is iirc under $100. Front struts are more and if they’re not fully assembled (you probably don’t need springs) then you’re also paying some labor for disassembly and reassembly.

TL;dr- 4 hours of labor plus an alignment plus parts is probably $1000-1500

Dude’s been my guy for 20 years. This is why I am perplexed.

Going through this same quandary now, too.

It's running $5,900 to $6,900 for a full Old Man Emu kit installed (3 quotes) for the BP-51s ... Unless you call a shop like Slee or very specific places, no one else seems to want to call back for basic service to quote shock replacement. I just want shocks and to fix the squat after ~100k miles. Blank stares and silence on the phone...

This exactly. Indy shop just quoted $949 for a pair of front "struts" (parts only) - which they claim are OEM - saying they are 'quick struts' because they don't "want to take the labor" to disassemble the coilover & install the shock + compress the old spring. Said it's 'probably bad' - uh-huh, so they can tell that over the phone now... Front OEM shocks (PN 48510-80824) are about $163 on sale right now. Sigh... so charge me $500 for labor you don't want to do?

I cannot find a 'quick strut' pre-assembled coilover assembly. If someone can point the way, I'm all ears - I can't compress the springs myself.

Rears (PN 48530-69695) are $54 each. The same shop quoted $450 for two - parts only!

Two local Mr T dealers service won't return calls either - unless you're doing an oil change and buying overpriced wipers, they ignore and hope you'll go away, or maybe we can show you a brand new Land Cruiser, sir?

That’s pathetic.

I’ve experienced the same unfortunately for other things I thought trivial in years past.

Those “quick strut” assemblies will be aftermarket and frankly, total s***.

Great point, mine was probably too much of a blanket statement.

We can get good assemblies pre-assembled. That won't be what @2HundyJTex was being quoted.

About that.. @2HundyJTex you are aware you can rent the spring compressors from orielly? I've used them a couple dozen times by this point, but never owned a set so far.

My guess is you’ve seen some stuff similar at work with situations that can result from auto parts stores spring compressors. I’m leery of this result and I actually looked into (briefly) getting a wall mounted unit. They’re several thousand a piece. And this was pre 2019 dollars.

The typical quick struts are total trash. I didn’t know Bilstein’s were an option however. I had a shop do my front struts years ago and it was over a grand including alignment (with me supplying the Bilsteins).

As I said I have used parts store spring compressors a lot and the biggest issue I've seen is galling of the area under the hex head. Never a safety issue when used properly.. and I haven't been on one of those calls either. Don't really remember hearing about them. Yeah, I'm sure it has happened.. but it isn't common.
