I'd like to conduct a poll about the current availability of strike anywhere matches. I haven't been able to find them in Oregon for years. I always pick up a few boxes in Idaho or Montana when I'm up there. Can't stand the bull**** strike on box matches.

Are strike anywheres readily available in your area (like at the supermarket), only available certain places, or impossible to find?

I found mine at save mart. they aren't the same as they used to be. look at markets in mountain area general stores and truck stops...

The only place I've been able to find them where I live is at a local army/navy surplus store, never was able to find them at the few camping stores I had checked.

Found them at Bass Pro, the big boxes like back in the good old days.

I bought a brick of them a few months back on Ebay. They are made in Chile and they were shipped to me for a very reasonable price. They are not quite as good as the old "Blue Tips", but, will light on most anything.

I would buy a good supply, as these will likely be banned, like the old ones, soon, and I;m very surprised they shipped them!

Here is the link I bought them from - http://www.ebay.com/sch/sis.html?_n...id=221664505894&&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2658

NOTE - Only the Penley's and some of the old stock are Strike Anywhere matches. All the new ones will only light on the striker strip.

Damn. They ain't giving those away.

I miss the Ohio Blue Tips. Typically all I'm able to find are Diamond and they are garbage these days, lot's of duds and I feel like the "strike anywhere" element is dubious. More like "strike on the quickly disintegrating box or few other places that are just exactly right and you're very careful so the head doesn't fall apart in the process." Penley's are better. When I'm in Canada, I try to remember to pick up some Redbird matches. They are the best of the modern strike anywheres.

I bought a pile of Fire Chief strike anywhere matches a few yrs ago(about 12 boxes)-quality is not that great, but about 8 out of 10 will light.-don't remember where I got them--search?

I saw some in Cabela's a while back, I could swear they were strike anywhere matches. Or check REI.
Funny the comment that land crusher made about Redbird matches in Canada. They are not as good as
a few years ago, they just don't burn for long like they should. I was in India a couple of years ago for a
few months. I brought back about 4 boxes of their strike anywhere matches, the absolute best matches
I've ever used. So if you see any Made in India, I recommend them.

I don't think any of big match companies in US sell a real strike anywhere match. Liability problems, they would sometimes light in pockets or from rubbing together. That;s why I'm surprised they ship the Penley's.

Blue Diamonds are not, neither are REI's. When I searched, the Penley's and a brand from Canada are the best, but not as good as the old light off your finger nail strike anywhere's.

Come to think of it. It probably has been about four years since I bought Redbirds. The last couple Canadian camping trips I think I was using matches I already had.

Liability, I just remembered a story of my brothers best friend from back in the '70's. On the school bus with a pocket full of
matches when they decided to strike upon themselves! There he was dancing a kinda jig, ripping his jeans off trying to get this bundle of
matches out of his pocket. If I remember, 2nd and 3rd degree burns. I'm betting he still has a scar. Those were good matches though...

Check them out to see if they will light on anything other than the box striker, likely not, unless they are real old stock.

The new matches still say "Strike Anywhere" on the box, but they won't!
