Hello everyone.

I just got a 2014 LX570 with 67k miles. So far I have been very happy it.

Today I noticed a sound when idling. I recorded a video in the YouTube link.

It is a rhythmic higher pitch whoosh or whining sound repeating every 1 second, you can hear in the background past the engine noise. (You have to up the volume to hear)

It is subtle but enough to easily notice if I pay attention. I can't really hear it while I am driving or if I have A/C on. It does not seem to speed up when I press the accelerator.

Does anyone have any idea what it might be? Is this a normal noise that all LC or LX570s make?

Thank you for your input.

JK

Do you have your seat coolers on?

this! my passenger seat makes some weird noises. I believe there's a filter that can be cleaned, but I haven't taken the time to dive into it...

Cooling fan for your nav/audio head unit? See if the sound is coming from your CD/DVD slot.

Quite a few rigs get this though it seems to be more of a cold weather thing.

Ahhh.. that could be possible. I didn't know that there was a separate cooling unit for the head unit, but I suppose there has to be a fan in the back usually.

The CD slot is within the main assembly, and the screen is just another module that mounts on top and is connected by cables. On the sides of the main assembly is at least one approx 2" cooling fan. I've had the unit out, though mine is a landcruiser I'm assuming the form factor and cooling fans are somewhat similar. Either way people have posted at least a half dozen times trying to track down an intermittent whining/whirring sound coming from their CD slots and based on experience my feeling is it's a cooling fan bushing going bad. I think it goes on a cycle because the fans spin up then hit a certain RPM that allows wobble, which slows it down, then the wobble stops, then it speeds up, etc.

One thing that was suggested to help narrow it down was to start tracking down and pulling fuses for different systems. Seat cooler, audio system, etc. To my knowledge it might still run the fans when the audio system is "off" as nav and climate functions still work through the unit, it just doesn't make sound. Or shouldn't, anyway.

This is a picture from when I had my main assembly out to fix a volume knob. On the side, which is oriented toward the bottom of this photo, you can see some perforations in a round pattern. The fan is either right behind here, or on the other side of the unit behind similar perforations. It's been a while so I can't remember whether there are two fans, or one, or which side it's on if just one.

Anyway, I never got feedback as to whether the issue for people was the fans, but I'm about 90% confident that was their issue from the sounds I heard. So far mine isn't doing this though.

Good luck with it.

Excellent explanation. Trying different fuses makes sense.
Thank you for the suggestion. I will try that and see how it goes.
