Hi guys,

I just purchase a 1988 Toyota, my first "old school" Toyota. Looking over the vehicle, I noticed the rims had these covers blocking the stem access. It didn't appear that these covers can be screwed off. What would be the best way to remove these covers if I ever needed to fill my tires?

Looks like a set of flush mount valve stems - the idea being that they’re less likely to get snagged on rocks or such while fourwheeling. Something like these: Gorilla Flush Mount Valve Stems VS407C

The ones I’ve seen - such as the link above - have a slot for a flat blade screwdriver to take the cap off. Then there is a tool you screw in to be able to inflate/deflate the tires. Yours seem to be an anti-tamper style that uses a “key” with two prongs to take the cap off. I’d start by looking in the glovebox, ashtray, and other cubbies to see if you can find the key and inflater tool. If not, you can have a tire shop swap them out for new flush mount valve stems (with inflator and using the common flat blade screwdriver) or standard valve stems.

Have you tried a pair of needle nose pliers?
