I don't recognize that one. Depends what you mean by "stock". They were all dealer installs, so it very well could be original to the truck. :)

Thats what I ment, so they didn't come with heaters from the factory? When did they first come from the factory with heaters?

I think Living In The Past once said it was '65, or mid '65.

I know it was a option in 65 for a factory installed heater. A few have claimed that their 64 had one. Still waiting for picture proof to be sure it just wasn't a early production 65. 66 the heater became standard in the US market. An easy way to tell if the heater was a 65 or earlier factory installed heater is look at the that fresh air inlet in the passenger's cowl. 65 had the louvers at a 45 degree angle. The 66 thru the 71 model year the louvers are straight. After the 71 model year the louvers no longer were a bolt piece but stamped into the cowl on both sides.

My 62 doesn't even have louvers.

Defrost vents in the windshield started during 62 in all models of the FJ40. Mainly I believe for the aftermarket heater the dealer were installing in the early FJ40s. The louvers were only installed in the FJ40 that had a factory heater. The Factory heater was a option in 65 and maybe 64. Before that there was no factory heater option. All the earlier were aftermarket that didn't have a fresh air option. The pre 66 FJ40s that didn't come with the factory heater didn't have a fresh louvers at all. But all US model FJ40s did have defrost vents once they started during 62.

I'm not sure but I don't think my windshield has the defrost vents. Maybe it was produced before 1962. I know the cowl has them. Well anyway here's a picture.

The defrost vents started during 1962 not all FJ40s produced during 1962 had the defrost vent. Most I have seen with defrost vents were titled as 1963 so the change may have been towards the end of 1962. Your VIN will tell you the year your cruiser was produced. I have two 1962 produced FJ40s. One has the vents and is titled as 1963. The other doesn't have the vents and was titled as a 1962,

Although, not a 40, my 45 SWB has the defroster vents and a pretty low frame number, 13057. I don't know where that places it as far as when it was made in '62, but it is titled as a '62. I would guess that the 40 & 45 started the vents at the same time.

The 64 fj40 I parted out when I was building the 45swb had the full factory heater assembly. And I am sure it was a 64 [short running boards]

Conversely, my 10/64 lwb45 had the diagonal louver for the fan, but the windshield frame was NOT cut for the defroster ducts.

Well that's a first. Probably an opps at the factory. I'm sure there were markets that still did have a heater option. Your windshield must have been for one of those markets. Too bad there is no way to tell what day the vehicle came of the line like the block and head have. That way you could say it was Friday thing or maybe just a new kid on the line and grabbed one off the wrong stack. Pre 64 we have no way to know the month much less the day:frown:

Well, now that you mention it....there is SOMETHING ELSE odd that I never mentioned before. While the rest of the interior of the cab is that aqua-color of blue that was standard in 64, the inside of the w/s frame is more of a slate blue color, which is totally unfamilar to me. Kinda made me wonder, since I know that the truck had been in an accident [driver's rear corner of the cab was partially crushed when I got it] if somehow it had been replaced with a non-US w/s frame.

Boy, what a thread hijack!
