got 4 tubs of Valvoline Palladium and a grease gun. All I need to do is turn the steering wheel fully towards the wheel I'm going to fill... then unscrew that square bolt... fill the grease gun with tube and inject all the grease?? Is that right?

Pretty much...

Clean off the area around the plug to keep the muck from falling in before removing the plug. Try to check how much grease in in the knuckle first (zip tie, long thin rod, whatever) but IMO it is really hard to guess on that. IMO you can't force enough grease in with a grease gun to overfill the knuckle so fill till it starts coming back at you. I'd run it for a week then repeat the check and fill process.

and I am running through these threads that came up when I did a search to confirm what I believe about how to fill with grease... but am sharing a car while I'm working on brakes and am pressed for time... any knowledge on filling grease is greatly appreciated!

another memeber said 2 tubes per side... think thats accurate?

Depends...Are they empty? 1/2 full? :D

When I did my front axle service IIRC I used ~2 tubs/cans per side. I can't remember how much grease is in a can vs. a tube. If it were me, I'd just pump until it starts coming back out at you whether that is 1/2 a tube or 2 tubes. Then run it for a week and recheck it. If you have 4 tubes (or tubs?) then put up to 2 in each so they get an equal amount and then pick up a couple more to repeat the process in a week, or two. Some grease is a LOT better than no grease :steer:

pics of behind the wheel

the square bolt I presume is the one I remove and fill with grease is at the top of the first picture

the one I'm thinking I need to remove is the brown one behind the where that plug is coming out of.. am I correct?

Yep..."that" plug btw is your ABS sensor...The other bolts inboard of that are the top knuckle trunion bolts

Yes, the one circled above in red is the one to remove, squirt the grease (moly fortified) through and into the knuckle. Sorry for the confusion because now I see where you said "brown one" and all the bolts are pretty much brown. The one I circled though is just a plug, not a true bolt like the others around it.

You wouldn't have gotten far with the other two bolts...You'd get them out but the trunnion bearing is pressed onto the (can't remember the stupid name now ) the part the bolts go through. It will come up maybe 1/2" or so if that, but not enought to squirt grease through. Not sure what if any ramifications there would be had you loosened up/removed those two bolts but I'm thinking not much...just wasting some of your time is all...

cool.. thanks for your help corsair... you see that screw that looks like its not all the way in at the bottom of the pic... i saw on the other wheel its the same way, so i guess its supposed to be half way in like that?

That is the stop. Prevents you from turning the wheel too far.

D

What Ihasfip says...Those are the steering stops and you can see the bracket they hit in the picture you posted...

All part of the learning process...I asked the Master Toyota Tech that helped me with my first front axle service what those were way back when :)

You shouldn't ever have to touch them unless you end up having to replace an entire knuckle like I did recently.

wouldve been a two fold dumb move... good thing for the forum:beer:

Is there any coating of grease on the birfs?

Wow those are some clean looking birfs. And from the lack of rust on the swivel i wouldent be suprised if there was still a fair amount of grease in them. Worth checking the level before you randomly just pump off 2 tubes into each..... to much and it will just migrate into the diff itself faster.

i've learned a lot about working on cars and my LC in this first month of ownership... man that was easy putting grease into there... there was a good amount of grease in each one... used less than one tube total.
