okay, 87 4runner 5spd, here's my issue. every once in awhile, my clutch pedal would go from normal with abit of free play, than after a little bit of driving the free play will disappear, and be very stiff comparably, and the catch point will be higher... ideas on where to start, if any?

Mine was like that when I stopped driving it. When I tore it apart I found the clutch slave was full of rust, the piston was sticking in the bore. Ill be buying a new one when I put it back together.

the "finger" thingys on the clutch diaphragm might be getting bent out of alignment. that's what happened with mine when it was getting stiffer and stiffer for no apparent reason. but check the hydraulic cylinders first.

would that happen tho with normal everyday driving? as for the hydraulics part, after looking at the master and slave, they looked rather iffy, so I went out and bought new ones, gonna wait till the weekend to do so, so I can get help bleeding the system.

ok, so I replaced the slave and master for the clutch, and there was black sludge type of stuff inside both items. rather disgusting looking, but thanks for the tip to go after the slave, not having any issues.

That is brake fluid that has become contaminated with water, it turns black like that. That's why you should swap out all your brake & clutch fluid every 2 years.
