I have wanted to fix this problem for awhile now I have on my 92 HZJ73. The problem I'm having is when I use the go pedal, the truck doesn't move until I put excessive pressure. I have some "play" in a rod that goes from the end of the cable to the injection pump. Has anyone had this problem before and is there an easy way to fix this? I took a picture of the problem. Sorry I'm no camera man. It's the sideways black oily rod. The 2 ends both have "play".

Somebody else will chime in here shortly I'm sure, but the first thing I'd do to eliminate the source of the friction - disconnect the throttle cable from the lever on your injection pump. If you pull it all the way over on its spring, there is a relief cutout on the linkage and the cable end will slip out of the mechanism. Now you can verify where the resistance is coming from. Does the lever on the pump move freely, or is there drag as you push it through it's range? My bet is that the IP is fine, and the problem is interference on the other side in the cable/housing itself... but start with disconnecting from the linkage and then you can isolate the problem better.

If it is the cable, I'd just get a new cable/housing, and run through the firewall and enjoy your new effortless go pedal. Well, effortless until you actually TRY to go and the 1HZ reminds you that it'll accelerate when it's good and ready.

I got some advice to turn the idle control up to get rid of the “play”. It idles a little higher now but there is no “play”. I’ll update after I have gone for a drive. Hopefully it was an easy fix!

I’ll try your advice if the throttle adjustment doesn’t work. Thanks

There is a spec for where your idle should sit when at operating temp. If it was already there then I wouldn't change it.

You can also adjust play at the cable via a barrel adjuster on top. But I was under the impression that the problem was too much force required to press the pedal?

Ya it's weird. It kinda has like a soft spot like some steering wheels (it moves a bit but the wheels don't). In my case, the pedal moves a bit before it actually does something. The higher idle "bandaid fixed" the problem, except now it's a little louder. It totally drives different though, I kinda like it.

Hello,

Now that you are in the neighborhood, you might want to replace the accelerator cable.

The cable looks ok. The black oily rod is the problem. It is wobbly and I can't think of a good fix because both ends move when the accelerator pedal is used. I couldn't upload the video here so I put it on YouTube.
