I was ASSuming that the male piece the fits into the steering box pulls out completely to grease and reinsert. After removing pinch bolt and sliding u joint away from the steering box, the male piece doesn’t budge (have only applied grip pressure not wanting to damage it). Does this in fact slide out of the steering box for grease, or should I just re grease the end exposed after sliding away the u joint?

Someone said later cruisers don’t have a grease fitting. I have a late 85 fj60 and the grease fitting is under the metal clam shell cover that protects the u-joint closest to the gear box. I believe two 10mm bolts hold it down and it then just lifts off with a small tab on the opposite side of the bolts, spin the steering shaft until the grease fitting can be reached

Look under the clamshell pointe door out in the image

No need to even remove the clamshell, which is good because the bolts will surely snap, just remove the dust cap (#44 above). With the wheels pointed relatively straight, the zerk is visible and accessible. Removing the wheel-well skirt allows you to snake the grease gun into the clamshell via that dust cap, which will likely disintegrate when removed being 39-yr-old plastic. I capped the hole with a rubber plug for now while I see if Toyota still makes the caps.
