The manual steering box on my 77 is very loose, and I know the procedure for trying to adjust it, but it seems that the adjustment can't be done with the box still mounted? Does anyone have a method for doing this? And if I can't get the play out of it, should I try and rebuild it myself? I saw some threads about this in anther section, but are the steering boxes the same for the 40s?

Thanks

Adjustment is a PITA, yes. Loosen the strike nut, take a small punch and turn the adjusting screw. Use frequent, light taps, so you don't mess up the slot. There are 90 degree screwdrivers out there, as well.

I've rebuilt mine before. It's not that difficult. A FSM is your friend for this task. After the rebuild, I used grease rather than gear oil to lubricate. Seemed to help.

Don't forget the center arm adjustment also.
