I just replaced a power steering box with a rebuilt one on my sons 84 FJ60. It started leaking in about 50 miles and I found that the adjustment nut was loose and the screw had baked out. I tightened it and in another 30 miles, it was loose and leaking again. I snugged it down with a wrench both times because that is all I had with me at the time. I did NOT torque it to the 33 lbs, but I did tighten it pretty darn tight both times. I did not remove the nut to check the washer, but from what i can see, it looks new. I tend to want to think it is the washer maybe??

has anyone experienced this or have an idea what might be causing it??? My main concern is some sort of problem with the shaft maybe, but I am hoping it may be as simple as a bad washer.

From memory the washer has a rubber coating in the middle for better grip. I hadn’t changed mine out when I rebuilt it so I still have it in the package. There is a trick to getting to adjusted... is the steering okay other than that being loose?

All else seems to be great on the steering. The nut just seems to loosen and leak.

I just had this happen to my newly rebuilt steering box. I wondered why the steering started feeling loose and then noticed a small puddle of fluid. I adjusted the screw and tightened the nut.

@cruiserneck did you have anymore issues with yours?

I am having the same problem. Newly rebuilt box with probably 1000 miles on it. It started leaking from the adjustment nut. I tightened it down a few days ago and today it started leaking again. The nut had completely loosened up. I could spin it with my fingers.

Is there a trick to this thing? Or do I just need to tighten the piss out of it?

Thanks

Have you tried putting loctite on it? if that doesn't hold you could always put wire through the adjusting screw to make sure it doesn't back out.

Anyone figure this out? I'm experiencing the same thing. I put about 8000mi on a rebuilt box before the nut started coming loose. I have tightened it as much as I am comfortable without doing something stupid.

I swear by Vibra Tite vs Loctite. It creates a bonded agent to the threads & especially effective in a lubricated environment where as loctite changes it's capabilities once it is exposed to anything petroleum before drying. It is also great in it's resiliancy for staying intact after at least one removal. I discovered it on my guns. Bad Ass stuff!
