Looking for some info on orientation on the mini truck steer gear box , I have only seen pictures from Ebay and not sure if it is a generic pic they are using.

It appears that the pre 85 box housing is more to the left of the pedestal and on the later boxes the housing is to right of the pedestal .....can anyone confirm this for me.

I am trying to figure this out for a possible swap for a RHD 40 to make this work I need it to line up with the steering shaft and drop on the inside frame rail so the gear housing has to sit to the left of the mounting bracket.

Another question are the pitman arm locations the same on all mini boxes I have seen a pic of one with a pendulum pitman arm like a 40 has and the others seem to be the standard horizontal style side to side motion, can you guys shed some light on this and give me years of change.

After writing this post I went to the parting section and there was a pic of a 83-85 box that is oriented to the left and possibly will work ,is there a older style box that has a pendulum style pitman and if so does anyone have a picture to go along with a reply so I can determine if it would work.

The 79-85 boxes have an arm that moves forward and backwards, the 86-95 boxes move side to side. Both styles are designed to orient the steering shaft over the frame rail. The early boxes sit on top of the rail, and the newer boxes mount to the left side of the frame rail. If that clears anything up.

Thx 2ndgen what side of the box does the pendulum pitman sit on the pre 85

The one I just removed from my '80 was mounted on top of the frame and the arm was outside the frame and moved forward and backward. If you were trying to mount the box on the right side frame rail you could probably make it work. You'd have to figure out something with the steering arms though. The "J" style arm that's on the mini won't work. You would basically need a mirror image of all the parts. OR, what I would do, is just buy a hi steer kit for RHD and find a box that will work with it.

What is the crossover year from solid axle to IFS it seems to me the steer box is mounted diifferent for the IFS box which has the pitman pointing back to the steering and box I saw in the parting out section had it pointed forward.
I need to get this straight so I can start my search for a used box locally and not chase the wrong box through the junk yards.

85 was the last year of the solid axle so anything 86 up will have the IFS.
