Just replaced the contacts and plunger on an 84 FJ60 OEM starter. Before, I was getting the standard "turn the key, no click, tap the starter with a hammer, fires right up"

Now, non-start issues are gone, but my battery sounds like it has been drained after sitting for a while. Or it will turn over, I'll pump the gas, then turn it over again and it will sound like the battery is almost dead, and the tach will spin around to 4K and then back. It's like the battery either has a parasitic drain that wasn't there before, or there is some kind of huge power draw now at cranking.

The batter is only about 2 months old, straight off the shelf at O'Rielly's and tests good on my charger and batter tester.

I have checked the connections, only the plug on the starter, and the main battery cable (to the starter) were removed and then reconnected. I did remove the positive on the battery before any work, so there's no chance of a short during the removal reinstall on the starter. Battery terminal is tight, no corrosion.

Ideas? Thoughts? Ghosts in the Machines?

Everything is fairly new and pretty solid, all 1g or 0g, and all have good contact to non painted surfaces. Checked for corrosion on all the grounds as well.

I went back through every connection that was unhooked, and the only difference I could find was that I replaced a brass butterfly nut on my positive battery terminal with a stainless steel nut and washer. To eliminate all variables, I put the brass nut back and and the problem seems to have disappeared. I've let the truck sit for a couple of days and cranked it intermittently to see if there was battery drain or sluggish response from the starter and all seems fine now.
