I might as well include both top and bottom in the mix.

Working with basic tools here but not enough leverage in getting these suckers (bolts) out.

Appreciate any help SoCal crew.

Will be heading out to the store to get a breaker bar etc at this minute.
Having the right tools are the key for DIYs and experienced advise goes along way.

PB blasted last night - I was apprehensive since Im working with a starter and then putting something flammable. Just gotta get this done - right.

I have been there and done that. I didn't have a breaker bar when I needed one to fill up my front diff when I changed fluids. A 30 minute job turned into an overnight one since I didn't have the right tools. I upgrade my tools every chance I get (which is usually when I need a tool for a job) and am slowly but surely putting together a decent set. Since I missed out on the Father's Day Run I put that gas money towards these. Sure made tightening the lock bolt to the alternator a snap (I changed my belts 3 weeks ago and never tightened it all the way after spending 2 hrs on the job). Next time it should only take me 30-45mins to change ALL three belts...Wahoo.. the right tools help a lot.

Ha - Im not the only one then. :D:)
Thanks Smitty for reminding me everybody had to start somewhere.

Good news crew - got the top bolt loose with an extension, uni impact joint, and a regular socket wrench. But I think what did it was a combination of trying different ways to get leverage using a breaker bar 2 uni joints, extension - but I think the PB blaster might have been the thing that loosen everything up.

The bottom was a breeze compared to the top - used the uni impact joint, extension, and the breaker bar. Snap!

Remember PB blaster the night before!

Since I was in Mex (PV) when I did all a big PM job at my uncle's shop...(actually I assisted :) ) we took the starter to a auto electrician who changed the contacts and plunger in about 5 minutes and charged $5.US

Same day, we did the PHH, rad flush, hoses, belts, fuel filter, etc. etc.....I am just blabbing now...

Oooooooo good day.

The truck started - quicker than before :).

Aside from taking off the top and bottom bolts of the starter, it was a straight forward job.

Thanks to the usual suspect here, Georges Scolaro, and especially Slees Offroad site (use search for starter) which had a good angle on the actual starter rebuild.

I will post pics/comments for the next person who might need it later as I will take a warm shower.

Latinoguy - whoop dee dooo! Just joking! Actually you are very lucky to have resources to go to. As for me, Ive been a slacker for awhile...

Wow, late to the party. Why didn't you call me Alan? Glad you got it done.

Mo, its cool. You probably been busy.
MUD resources are the bomb when I was in a bind!

One thing I want to add is that I completely took both battery cables off before I started.

After the rebuild, the idle RPM was bottoming out after a minute (almost close to shutting down). I had to put it in neutral at stop, give it gas, and go to Drive to go forward.

After 4 starts and driving around the idle went back to normal :)

It must be the color of the vehicle. :D

Yeah 4.
I was sweating about it being something else if the idle wouldnt hold (computer not learning to adjust back).

That is actually a pretty long time. I haven't had mine idle bad once from simply disconnecting the battery. I did forget to reconnect one of the o2 sensors after the HG replacement but once connected it was back to normal in 30 seconds or so.
