The stability control light turned on by itself on the road and will not turn off.
Any suggestions as to how to turn it off.

Try to engage center diff lock? Check for an abs sensor issue? Unplug negative battery terminal for 10 min?

Techstream, carista, or another interface that can read more than just emissions/ECU codes will help you narrow it down.

Simple candidates could be something stuck in the ABS sensors or wires on the front face of your steering knuckles. Alternately people with failing rear axle bearings start to get ABS/VSC codes when the axle wobbles around sufficiently to not provide good signal to the sensor.

Basically, it isn’t common and could be a ton of things. You need proper diagnostics via reading the codes.

While I'm waiting for the battery cable I thought I'd add a couple more details .
I had forgotten my wife was driving and hit a bridge and in the rain and skidded slightly and that's when the light came on.
Also noticed the steering wheel is slightly off center steer straight but the wheel is now crooked.

These have a variable ratio box on the steering shaft between the wheel and rack/pinion. Certain conditions can make that go a bit sideways.

Search for VGRS. I seem to remember that it will eventually re-center itself, but it is plausible the light is caused by that condition or maybe it is trying to re-center and it can’t.

Turns out that the nut holding the upper ball joint was loose causing play in the wheel knocking the alignment out and triggering the light.
Gateway Toyota in Pierre South Dakota was able to get me in and out within a half hour.

Now getting an alignment and should be back on the road soon.

Was it the 'bridge side' joint?

Whew! Good catch and the warning light did its job.

The castle nut retainer also did its job but that's a potentially catastrophic failure if it were to come apart. Glad you looked into it!!

Nice! Not many vehicles will give a warning light on the dash from detecting a steering alignment issue.. glad you got it sorted.
