Hi folks,

My 97 LX450 has a flashing airbag light on the dash. I realize this subject is covered ad nauseam here, I did search and followed instructions in the FSM, to no avail. The things that worked for others didn't work for me and I'm getting no response from the system.

I have tried to clear the code following instructions in the FSM, with no luck. I cleaned the contacts and verified voltage from both pins to ground, probably tried 40+ times with different wires to get it to work, nothing changes. No faster flashing light, no clearance, no ABS light, it's as if nothing was different. I also tried to read the code by jumping the two pins specified in the FSM, a bunch of other lights on the dash flash (cruise, CEL, abs, etc), but the SRS light just flashes continually ~2 times/sec with no change.

The light is blinking 2 times a second, which the FSM calls a "normal code". At no point can I get the light to flash with variation indicating there is a code or clear it, even for a second. Nothing changes and I've tried timing it many ways and using different wires, even a multimeter to confirm voltage between the pins and ground.

The battery voltage seems fine, but I will try another tomorrow to be certain. The only other culprit per FSM is the airbag module itself, but before I risk messing with that, is there anything else I should try? Would a bad SRS module not respond to either of the above diagnosis methods like this (others seem to report some response, at least)?

Thanks

How's your starting/cranking battery and those connections?

Any recent work done to the vehicle including behind the dash or to the steering wheel/column/airbag wiring??

Have you dunked your vehicle (in deep water) recently?

Wait for an electron expert @jonheld to chime in.

I just put a new battery in today and the light still flashes

No behind the dash or console work I’m aware of. No dunks either. I just bought the car so it’s possible but no signs of either that I could see. Stock head unit, only mod would be the center diff switch and adding an OEM switch for the elockers. Everything else is factory and nothing looks like it’s been opened or removed

As another update, I created a wire to run directly between the - post on the battery and to the DLC1 pinout. I also videoed the dash while I did the procedure so I could see what lights were doing while it was going on.

At some point in the process, the lights do this:
  1. SRS light turns solid for ~1s
  2. ABS light flashes on once
  3. ABS light stops flashing, SRS light starts to flash again
  4. ABS light flashes again until I release from the Tc pin
  5. SRS light continues flashing
Other times the result is simpler: SRS light turns solid (on video), ABS light starts flashing, then ABS light turns off and SRS light continues to flash ~2 times a second.

I'm still unable to get a diagnostic code from it by jumping E1 and Tc

Sorry for the bump, I'm still trying to figure this out, anyone have suggestions?

Do most Toyota dealers have the vague "Toyota tester" that can connect to the DLC1 connector and read codes or try to reset it? I'm nervous I'll need to swap the airbag ECU but they seem NLA :(

This is the next page in the manual. It details how to clear the code. Does that help?

Hi @Shinook, I ran into the same issue on my ’96 LX450. After testing everything, the problem turned out to be the airbag. I have two LX450s, so I swapped the airbags between them. When I did that, the airbag light came on in the donor vehicle and went off in the other one.

Follow these instructions to reset

Test Clock spring / Spiral cable with multimeter.

If no issues, it's likely the airbag squib. My understanding is they squib can degrade over time. buy used LX450 airbag.

Hey @Shinook did you end up resolving this? Was it your airbag squib? I have the same exact issue on my 97’ LC and have had a tough time figuring out the issue. Mine also does the continual 2 blinks/second, no codes to clear, replaced the battery and cleaned up grounds but the issue persists. Wondering if you got this figured out?
