Started up my 83 22R yesterday and terribly loud squealing suddenly started and smoke came out from my hood.

I tried to drive it and make it go away :hillbilly:. Didn't work so I pulled over. Turned it off and smoke was coming from my belt or smog pump, couldn't tell. I had an extra belt so I wanted to get her home.

Started her up, no smoke, no squealing.:hhmm: Then magically my tachometer comes back to life and my truck is idling better than it has in over a year. Then I :steer: it home with no problems.

Start it up this morning and it's fine. Tachometer dead again:lol:

:meh:

Ranger,

I can't tell by your post. Is it the alternator without a doubt? I will try a new one if you are pretty sure. Thanks.

How many times do I have to change my alternator and starter in this truck? I have gone through two of each in less than 4 years. WTF am I doing wrong?....:bang:

it could be the alt. the pulley has to be seized. the reason you are going thru alternators is cause you gave away the OE one, and replaced it with crap AFTMKT junk.

you should never give away a OE starter or alternator. both parts are totally serviceable.

do you have powersteering?

what belt you replace? the alt or PS?

loosen both belts. spin the alt. is it smooth? or chunky? chunky is bad.

check for the same with the ps idler bearing. go from there.

Thanks guys.

Yesterday, a bunch of chatter was coming from either my AC bearing, or smog pump bearing so I think I have found the problem. I am a bit busy with other things right now so I am going to have the girl sleep for a while.:frown:

How cold was it when you started it? My dad's smog pump got some water in it somehow, and we fired it up one morning, and it about ate the belt.... Turns out the water had froze in the pump, "seizing" it... We took it inside for a few minutes, and it started spinning fine..... Then it dawned on us as the water rolled out.... :p
