Bought 97 collectors edition recently. Great vehicle - but has annoying squeak behind the dashboard to the left of the steering wheel (between steering wheel and drivers door) that appears intermittently. I tried searching the forum for potential source of the noise but did not see anything of interest. Any help or suggestions to eliminate it are appreciated!

Thank you!

Is it more noticeable at idle?

No squeak at idle. It only squeaks or chirps when moving down the road as if two pieces of the dash may be touching?

Check the plastic clamshell that surrounds the steering column just forward of the steering wheel. Be careful not to overtighten the screws if loose.

The dash is actually spot welded to the wall of the cab down near your left knee. There is a little "L" shaped metal bracket that attaches to the dash with a bolt and then it's spot welded to the wall to secure it.

Look under the dash and see if that weld has broken and the dash is flexing/chirping on you. Mine did that on the passenger side and I ended up drilling a hole and using a self tapping sheet metal screw to secure it to the wall. Problem solved.

Oh sweet! Just got a 40th last month and I started hearing this annoying chirp/squeak. I'm gonna check this out for sure!
Thanks to the OP, and Aggie for the advice!

I had same thing but it was related to the wheel it self....it triggers when the wheel is turned slightly to the left.

I was told it is a spring, but need to know how to work on airbags to fix it.

Just an idea....

Fixed mine occurred after replacing steering column floor gasket. Was due to some rubbing in rubber piece where upper steering shaft attaches to lower shaft. Pulled apart and reattached. Tightened down real well and problem solved.

Long distance recall, but I may have found a squeak/chirp I’ve been battling for months. I installed a SolveFunction hole plug last fall and went to check it this AM. It managed to back off and out of its hole, and the steering shaft was rattling around inside the blown-out hole!

I pushed the plug back into the hole and the shaft is back to being nice and tidy. Test drove and no squeaking! I decided to put a wrap of eelectrical tape on the shaft behind the donut and tried to tighten the zip tie one more click. Let’s see if this is the final fix.
