OK, I'll admit it, I'm too busy (OK, lazy :)) to try and figure it out myself, but it's been on my mind so I'll ask since you guys are so good technically and reasonably forgiving :D...

Now, IIRC, there is a cable coming out of the trans (or is it TC) for speed info. I assume it's a mechanical cable from what I remember of it (thick, O ring at the case for oil etc). Yet, it seems like the speedo is electronically controlled from what I remember reading here (may be wrong).

So, if it is an electronic speedo (is it?) and if it's a mechanical cable (is it?), what's with that? Couldn't they have used a sensor like an ABS sensor and an electric cable....

anybody knows about all this or do I have to really dig in :)?

On my 91 FJ80 it's cable driven. I'm fairly certain that all 80 Series are cable driven to the speedometer itself. There are different speed sensors on the different transfer cases, and they're monitored differently by the different ECUs, but the speedos themselves are cable driven.

Pre 9208 production (FJ80) is cable driven speedo.
Post 9208 (FZJ80) is sensor and wire
The speedo drive on the Tcase kinda looks the same but the early one turns a cable, the later turns some sort of revolution sensor.

I'll go under tonight to have a look at the 97 but I sure remember that TC cable to be some huge thick mofo with a big mechanical connector at the case (and the Oring issue), nothing like a thin electric cable coming out... that's the part that's puzzling me... maybe my memory is going...? Surely, it's not a short mechanical cable going to some sensor, right? that would be bizarre...

If yours has a cable, it's a very rare unit!:D Every FZJ80 that I have seen has a speed sensor with a wire harness plugged into it.

OK, so it is my memory then... must have seen it on an earlier year and it stuck with me for some reason... :o

now I really got to go have a look.... :)

this is what I remembered (off a 96 apparently). Doesn't look like your usual little electric sensor wire. What's with that?

Looks like a speed sensor with a booted plug connected to it and a wire harness with a corrugated plastic protector over it. I could be wrong, feel free to cut it all open and see!:D

yea, yea... :)

seems a tad excessive to me for a lousy electric wire and a sensor that should be all of a 1/4" magnet inside the case... :)

It's thick and shielded and booted et. al in deference to its importance. ABS, tranny CPU, various emissions and CEL strategies all use the vehicle speed in some important part of their operation. For FJ80 owners would I be correct in guessing your cables come out of the exact same spot??

Does this mean Slee's correction gear is only appropriate for the FJ, not the FZJ?

IIRC the gear will fit the sensor or cable drive setup.
