In cleaning up a used transfer case that I picked up for my rig. I found that the speedometer gear was stripped. I pulled it out and it says it is a 6x18. In trying to match it up with the drive gear it does not seem to fit very well and I can not tell if it is because it is stripped or someone had put the wrong gear in previously. Is there a way to tell what the right number of speedometer gear teeth are for my transfer case?

here are some old threads on the speedo gear there are 4 different plastic gears and only two different internal metal gear's , if i remeber correctly

I have a 1970 FJ-40 that I am putting a late 70's transfercase in. In reading these threads I am wondering if I need to have the 17 tooth gear because my speedometer is 1970 vintage and one reference indicates that the older models have a 17 tooth gear will this give me the best match for my speedometer?

Just posted this to another a similar thread...

I had a similar problem and contacted SOR to see if they could help.

Found out that there is a number printed on the side of the pinion gear (sorry if I got that term wrong)... the gear that slips over the output shaft on the Tcase.

Very small and very hard to read, but it'll tell you what tooth count you need.
(i.e. 6 x 18, etc.)

I'll include a pic that I had to take through a jewelers glass.

I had a 17 tooth gear, and (as seen in the pic) I need an 18.
