Personally I wouldn't mess with the gear (I don't even think it is available anymore). It doesn't give accurate correction and it isn't adjustable. The electrical correction is adjustable and can be tuned to be spot on with any tire size.

Pretty sure your speedo is either gear driven or electronic.
I have a 91 fj80 so it's all "gears/cable"
Call these guys up they are great !

I posted this on a old thread I've got going,
I found a company that will make a gear case to correct the speedo assembly for around $90.00 the best part is its servicable, if you change tire size you can open it up and change the gears to yield the correct ratio. the companies name is speedometer service 800-634-2145

you must have never used a gear driven speedo calibration unit or used the wrong company, mine is adjustable/servicable and accurate they will custom make the correct gear set to match your setup. you tell them how fast your speedometer says your going when your gps showes 60 mph the calculation is baset of that "baseline"..

Nope. Never heard of an adjustable gear driven unit. $90 is cheaper than $200 if it works.

It's great product made in Portland, OR USA!
Pretty simple to adjust, open the unit up and change the gear sets to get the proper calibration. To the OP, I personally run this product and it works well and you can't beat the price. Installs in less than 5 minutes and Replacement parts for it are available and it will be made to your calibration needs. Did I nmention it's made in the USA....:steer:
E-Nuffsaid.

There still is some advantage to the electronic units in that you may have more than one setting so that you can change tires or wheels quickly and then simply throw the switch for the other combo. Also, you only pay $200 one time.

How much does it cost to reset the mechanical calibrator with new gears? Also, I assume that you have to get under the truck and change the configuration of the mechanical calibrator?

You may want to look at Mark's speedo in Australia as it may be quicker than getting it from Slee. The price is the same with the shipping.

yup, it does need to be removed, overhauled and installed if one is to change the calibration. however it serieslly takes about 1 minute to remove and install. but for the price you could have 3 of the mech units at differant corrections for differant tires and still have enough money left over to buy lunch. by all means spend $300 on an electric unit, im not that guy.
slee and others do not offerr differant calibrations they offer a "one size fits all application" and, well...... it doesn't fit all.
pretty sure "slees" was made to correct 33" tires or something I don't remember. and it was allmost twice as much.

I was just trying to help the OP and others out.
there are a couple differant options out there for a reason.
To each there own.

doesn't look like they have a website, I was reffered to them by a local company. tell the guy what your vehicles speedo shows when your actuall speed (gps) is 60 what your driving and they will make you a re-calibration box.
hope that helps

They are $200 and the Truspeed calibrator I use allows you to set 2 calibrations without sending the unit away. Then you can switch back and forth between the two by the flick of a switch. If you want to change one or both calibrations it is quite simple.

I don't think Slee even offers the gear anymore. Still, it's good info. If the mechanical correction box you speak of would have been available when I bought the Truspeed I might have gone that way.

I'm running the gear from Slee on the :princess: truck. Supposed to correct for 33's, but found it's still quite a bit off.

It's close enough for government work, so I left it. :meh:

I wouldn't really recommend it.....

I use my Ultragauge. I can set the correction to GPS confirmed speed regardless of tire size. I run 37s with 4.88s (no correction needed), and studded 33s during the winter, and the correction is a few clicks, plus all the other useful, somewhat useful, and just plain silly data it spits out for ~$60 IIRC.

Reviving this old thread...my '91 80 Series is waaaay off and I'm about to do a rally that includes TSD legs. We bombed this part last year, trying to find a way to improve the speedo.

The number for Speedometer Service doesn't seem to go there anymore, the link on Slee Offroad is dead and Yellow Box seems more geared towards motorcycles.

Anything out there nowadays?
