Looks like I ordered the wrong speedo cable from CCoT.

My 74 pig appears to have a 2 piece cable. 1 from the tcase to a small box on the firewall, then another from the box to the dial on the dash.

I need just the lower part, can I bypass that little box and just run this one from the dial to the tcase? Not sure it wil fit actually as it has the newer, clip for the gauge and I bet my dial is a screw type.

thoughts or input?

Much appreciated, thanks.

Did some more digging and it looks like SOR sells a 1 piece speedo cable to bypass that box.

Next question.... how do I get the dash out?? I'm trying to pull the gauge cluster to access the back of the speedo and have all 4 screws out but it won't clear the steering column. Thoughts?

Much appreciated, thanks.

It is very snug for sure. IIRC when I did mine, there are two tabs on the top of the gauge cluster housing that may take a little light screw driver lifting of the dash (while simultaneously pushing down on the gauge cluster). Once those clear the dash housing the cluster can then be moved forward enough to access the speedo cable. It is still a very tight procedure...but possible. Just don't push too hard on the gauge cluster with the screw driver. Patience.

thanks!

I loosened the steering column enough that I could finally get to the back of the dash, took some finesse though. ;)

Happy to report the speedo cable that CCoT send DID fit just fine, and is all hooked up!

I managed to burst the bulb that lights the left side gauge cluster so I need to replace that, probably replace all the bulbs as long as I have it apart. :) :)

Yes, you can bypass the little box. That is a hidden odometer that was used for smog purposes.

A semi-related question...

I have a stock 69 55 speedo cable. Dual cases were installed and the speedo cable is to short.

Has anyone ever seen or heard of a 69 FJ55 speedo cable extension that would fit a mini case?

I know Marlin makes an extension for minis but, not sure if it would fit a 55 (69) speedo.

i dont know if they are the same or not, but, he makes the extensions so i bet he can make a cable for you with the right ends. another easy home brew fix would be to get a mini cable, cut the amount off the end you need and cut your cruiser cable, put the two together with a new inner cable from the auto parts store in the HELP! section.

Hmmmm... both sound like good ideas. I will go exploring to check them both out.

splicing the housings works good, a piece of fuel line wrapped in thin metal sheet(think i used a coffee can) and held tight with a couple hose clamps does the job well.

PS now i am thinking about it again, the toyota end is not square its got a special thing on it, i remember i had to cut the end off the cable, drill it out and brazed the new cable into it. seems to be working fine.

Call up Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters. He had a cable that worked for my doubler setup which was easier and cheaper than going custom. He might have something you can use to go speedo to TC. I believe the cable was $25 or so.

Thanks surfpig!

Dam... that is good tech. bkcruiser put a lot of time in figuring that one out.

We do have some longer than stock cables available, as well as speedo cable extensions (12").
