Anybody ever seen this happen to a plug wire before? It looks like the outer material dried up and turned into powder. I'm not sure how old the wires are. I can't remember changing them so they are at least 2-3 years old. The motor was rebuilt by the PO about 6 years ago so I'm sure they were replaced then.

I am still getting spark through the wire so I just wrapped it in electrical tape until I can get new wires. I just don't want to put the new ones on there and have it do the same thing. It only happened to this one wire (#2 when starting from the front).

Other than a Pertronix conversion the ignition system is stock.

Any ideas?

It appears to be insulation breakdown arcing due to excessively high voltage. Make sure that your plug gap is correct so this doesn't happen again.
